Lower Radiator Hose-Does it have a Spring inside??

I am experiencing a heating problem with a stock 71 440.  I have done all of the normal things, like replace the water pump, have the radiator redone.  I can drive all day at 35-40 MPH and it will not heat up.  Over that it slowly starts to get hot.  Someone suggested that the lower radiator hose might be collapsing on me.  I bought a new one, but wondered if it was supposed to have a spring inside to h=keep it from collapsing?  The one IO bought did not have one, but I thought it was supposed to.  Stock 440 4 barrel, no air conditioning, 22 inch radiator.  Anybody know for sure?  Any other thought as to what might be my problem??  Any help is appreciated.

The last few replacement hoses that I've boughten have not had the spring inside, so I take the one out of the old hose and reuse it.

GN

I replaced mine too. But did not use the spring. Thought that new hoses would be made with better material. Let us know if that solved your problem, then I will replace mine.

I have yet to see a aftermarket hose with a spring.

bought a lower hose from NAPA it too had no spring. so I asked where's the spring he ran to the back of the store and simply took a spring out of a different model hose and now I just have to put the spring in the hose easy said then done

Thanks everyone.  I do not have an old spring in the old hose, so I will have to buy, or make one that will fit.  I will let you know if it works.  I appreciate all of the help.

The one i got for my 73 had a spring...guess it depends on the store. Hose i got was made by gates.

Dodge Don

Yes the lower rad hoses you get now have no reinforcement spring........I'll let you in on a little secret.......you can get them here....

They will fit a 440 hose like a glove....I did it. Took awhile to deal with the guilt....but hey....you gotta do what you gotta do  :shruggy:

ACUDANUT

The spring is just to keep it from getting kinked isn't it ?? If it's not kinked, how can this help it from getting too hot ?? :Twocents:

Ghoste

The spring helps to keep the hose from collapsing and reducing coolant flow to almost nothing.  It's on the suction side and at higher speeds this can become a problem.

Dodge Dan,
I took your advice and bought the spring made for the Mustang.  When you said it would fit like a glove, you were not kidding, it is PERFECT!  The only down side is this particular site has a $20 minimum order, I really didn't need 4 springs, so I bought myself a Mustang Hat.  I can't wait to get it on my car and see if it helps the heating problem.  This is why I love this site, lots of good folks who are eager to help a guy out with a problem.  Thanks again Dan!

No problem. It's Don by the way. No big deal.

Thanks Dodge Don for the info on the lower radiator hose springs from Virginia Mustang. I had the
same problem with my '69 R/T and '72 Rallye a couple of years ago--I ended up re-using the old
springs too. Now I will probably order some srings from them just to have on hand for next time.

Good to know. The back of my Satellite's trunk was full of extra parts and an old lower hose with the spring in it was present also. I knew that they were to prevent collapsing, but I'm still gonna use it with a new one. Can you keep on reusing them if they're in decent shape?

Ghoste

I have at least once so far, but sooner or later they would have to rot away enough to lose their integrity.

gasoline_24

I just ordered a spring for this from the Mustang site.  However because of the $20 minimum order I had to get 4.  If anyone needs one let me know as I now have 3 extras.  I feel so dirty ordering from a Mustang site. :misbehaving:

:smilielol: I did the same thing. I ordered 4 and sold the other 3 on EBAY (one at a time)....I made a profit on the whole deal!!  :2thumbs:

Chatt69chgr

I bought 4 too.  Sold two to a fellow Mopar nut same as what I paid.  Will use one and keep one for a future build.
