In my opnion this is not a real hemi car , just has a hemi vin tag swap.
Check this listing out: eBay 250344763045  It is a 68 Charger with a Hemi VIN tag.   It has factory AC dash,  AC firewall, no Hemi door badges, airtemp decal quarter window, and no photos of sub frame.  Someone is trying to pull a fast one.

Any ride that has been shot in "resale red" with little or no attention paid elsewhere - like the underbody -  is cause for alarm. I say get a magnacard and watch it fall off the body - a fun afternoon for all!

no torque boxes

8 3/4 too?!

Todd

A Dana 60 had to be special ordered with Hemi Charger automatic cars in '68. Only the 4-speeds had the
Dana 60 as standard equipment.

it has a data tag...anyone know how to read 68 and down tags? What is the paint code color? It doesn't look like a lot of options....

Dans 68

The only unique options were the 26" radiator, and power brakes with front discs. Apparently the car was not ordered (so Dodge built the car for John Q Public). It is sparse on options.... :P

The color code is 331, meaning Charger Red on the roof and body. The paint is monotone.

Dan

Edit : Were all Hemi's (esp. in '68) special ordered? This is a late built car (June 18, 1968) so...?

Paint color on the tag is "331" or Charger Red with a white interior and a white stripe. Says 26" radiator(?) which isn't likely, console and bucket seats.

Dan, I'll need to do more research but I don't think you could just order the 26" rad - it came with something else - usually A/C. I don't think it would have the max cooling without the Dana either. So what does that leave? Maybe the answer is in those other threads but I can't read them until this evening.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

WingCharger

I thought all Hemi's and 440-6's had 26" rads?? :shruggy:

Maybe it had a really low special order rear gear ratio that got the 26"?
I know that power steering cars with gears numerically higher than 3.90 got a power steering cooler. Maybe the same applies? :shruggy:

'68 Hemicars would have come with a 2898048 26" radiator, although whatever is in that car isn't a standard Chrysler radiator that's for sure.  Whether the car has a 26" core support isn't much of a sign, since having A/C would have boosted it into 26" radiator territory AFAIK.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but based on the fender tag codes shouldn't this car have come radio delete (no antenna) and as a hardtop (no white vinyl top)?

It really looks like someone did a tag swap on a half-way decent looking A/C ride of some sort, but an original hemicar it is not.

Wonder if someone could ask the guy what is stamped on the core support?  If he knows it isn't supposed to match the VIN, he might go ahead and post the information.  More than likely he doesn't understand that it SHOULD match the S.O. number on that Fender Tag - which undobutedly it doesn't.

You're right - no vinyl top on the tag. No radio code either - would it be missing for a radio delete car? I suppose so.

I didn't know about the Hemi car radiators being 26". Maybe I had that confused with the standard 440 R/T. :P An A/C car should have had a 26" radiator as far as I know (both of mine do).

The spelling/grammar is truly horrible in that ad.

Good idea about asking for the body numbers.

Switching to a column shift and adding a buddy seat isn't exactly a trivial ordeal. Wonder if anyone could get a look at the floor pan to see if there's a hole cut for the floor shifter? While they're down there they could confirm the lack of any of the Hemi frame/floor stiffeners.

This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Dans 68

...and per the fender tag it is not specified as having A/C. Dealer install (and I'm being generous)? The radio delete I assume is deduced from there not being a code number under the "R" designator on the tag ("1" being an AM radio, and "8" being AM/FM).

Guys, I will ask him the following questions. Let me know if i should add anything.

Hi, beautiful car, I have a couple of questions for you, as a few things on your tag don't match up. Hemi cars didn't come with factory AC, so i am wondering about this. Where are the R/T and HEMI door badges? Where are the HEMI torque boxes? Shouldn't it be a radio delete from the tag info? Also from tag info I believe it should be one color, was the top added later? What is stamped on the radiator core support?

Anything you guys want to know, I will ask him.
I'd rather die than go to heaven.
