getting a 40yr old tire off the rim??

Hey Guys,

My customer's 68 R/T has the original spare tire and I'm going to redo the rim and was curious about a few things.  The tire shows a little dryrot, but nothing too bad.  The rubber is still pliable.  How can I safely remove the tire from the rim without destroying it?  Is it such that a tire machine should be able to do it without any issues, or would that totaly ruin it?  I'd like to blast the rim and my cabinet isn't big enough for the whole assemble to fit into.  Any ideas?

It's in good shape with just a tad bit of scale.  I could probably just sand the thing down, but didn't know if there was a simple way to get the tire off without destroying it.

I took the tires off of mine last month when I was getting it ready to move it to Ohio. The tires were the ones that were on it when I bought it back in 86. All but one came off fine but that one was rotted so bad that the sidewall was almost gone.

As long as it hasn't been out in the weather like mine was, A machine should probably be ok. Just be sure they use a lot of soap so the bead slides off the rim ok.

Older tires aren't as pliable as they once were, but if you use the right amount of a Rubber Lube such as "Ru-glyde" you might be allright. But I think I'd try a different approach.

  I have had tires that were mounted for a long time and the rubber stuck and took off some rubber on the bead. I had to put a tubes in them because the bead surface was trashed. I also lost some good ones when the tire machine tool ripped some bead surface too because of the age. If you really like the tire I would just cover the tire good and leave it on and paint it.
