If you like it then it's worth restoring.

4324629 is a 2bbl carb  for a 318.  It's a Holley 2280 series carb.

R40214 is the manufacturer number.

check this site out for available years that you can get a replacement carb... or to buy a rebuild kit.  example: that 2280 4324629 was available on a 318 truck from 78-87.

can't find much on the 3086 except that it is a holley carb according to this carb list

also don't forget holley itself, give their tech line a call and they will answer your questions.

sweet thanks> another question for all you.... this car i assume hasnt been started in ohhh i say 20 some years> what should be checked out for a 1st startup?  i know the basics such as fluid levels, connections, grounds etc but is there a anything that the charger is known to do/break so i dont overlook it >i would assume the mechanical fuel pump is junk after sitting around for all those yrs...is that rebuildable for a 1st start or just fork out the money for a new one?  thanks

lisiecki1

if it hasn't been started in 20 years the fuel tank and lines are probably junk....i'd go with a cheap mechanical fuel pump and a pickle jar just to start it up.........mine hasn't been started in 7 years and i had to junk the tank and the sending unit....the lines were good....so if you need lines let me know, because they're just taking up space in the shop...........but i'm going resto mod so i don't need that stuff anyway (lines wouldn't flow enough......)

nice thanks!>> is there anything in the fuel tank that ill need to do the whole pickle jar rig up?? haha>> do those fuel pumps need to be bleeded or can i just crank the engine to suck the fuel up?  it may sound dumb but again it may be common knowledge that i had no knowledge of haha

lisiecki1

if you're taking the mechanical pump out of the loop then you'll need a cheap mechanical from the auto parts store  and some rubber fuel line....just stick one end in the pickle jar, to the pump, and from the pump to the carb.....the carb itself wont just suck the fuel up, you have to feed it....you can always try to use the mechanical pump first and go with the electric if it doesn't work

BROCK

Your mechanical fuel pump isn't rebuildable.  Going through the entire fuel system is smart!
When you do replace the pump:  make sure the pushrod is pushed up (or is this just a big
block thing)
Neet trick for getting her started:  Cut the top out of a (fill in your favorite beverage) can
& put a pinhole in the bottom.  Cover the pinhole with a finger & put gas in the can.  Aim
the hole over the carb's vent tube & remove finger.  This will fill the floatbowl.  Now, if she
is gonna start she will.

Don't forget to check your plugs while you're at it.

+1 on the above message...but if you use the soda can trick be wary of where all the fuel is going....having not been running in 20 years.....in the event of a backfire it'll make your engine real toasty......

and the pushrod thing is just a big block thing....your 318 should have an eccentric bolted to the front of the timing chain assembly that operates your fuel pump.....

I tell you what no manual can tell me the stuff u guys are telling me haha>>ive seen in old 4X4 mags that if an engine hasnt been running in a long time that its a good idea to pull the plugs (mine already has new ones in) and put a small amount of oil in the cylinders to avoid a dry start>> is that a good idea?  :scratchchin:

lisiecki1

absolutely......a little bit of marvel mystery oil wouldn't hurt either.....

Never hurts to have a fire extinghisher around when working with an old carb (or new one).

I have a 73 SE 318 ,car, put 446 in. I like the car, its worth restoring ,scratch that, hot rodding to me!

129,000 made, lots of parts on ebay, less $ than 2nd gen. , disk brakes, electronic ignition already. If you like the car,do it.

Wait a minute.  Are you implying that some people get the money back that they put into their cars?  You think I'm one of those turnip truck guys don't you?
