Intake Manifold suggestions.............................

Hi all -

I am getting ready to replace the Holley Street Dominator on my 383, when I got the car this intake was on the engine.  The engine has been rebuilt and the intake was used and looks so, so I wanted to replace it with a new one.  The 383 is fairly mild, has a little more cam in it, tti long tube headers, stock heads, Holley 750 DP, mopar elec. distributor.  The car is a 4 speed with 3.55 gears.  I am really looking to add torque at the bottom end out of a manifold I choose.  I was thinking the Edelbrock Performer but from what I have read, it seems like it might be a lightweight stock replacement?  So any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

Ryan

That is a pretty descent manifold. I'd try it out first before spending money on something else. A simple beadblast will clean it up just like new if appearance is important. A 4-hole spacer will help the bottom end power and throttle response if you feel that it's lacking. Use a Felro 1214 intake gasket to block off the heat crossovers and keep the fuel cooler...this will produce better results.

Ron -

Thanks for the reply, I was under the impression that the Holley Street Dominator being a single plane was going to perform better at higher rpm's.   And maybe be a little weaker in the low end torque department.  You mentioned a four hole spacer, is there a certain thickness that I should be looking for?

Definitely willing to beadblast and save the dough.

Thanks,

Hi Ryan, a 1in 4-hole is what you want. It does 2 things ; first, it creates more signal to the carb which helps the boosters pull fuel at lower engine speeds and give the engine more "punch". Secondly, the spacer acts as an insulator to keep the fuel charge denser and create more power....cooler fuel is always better. Make sure you get the "Phenolic" composite spacer   ;)
Mike (brightyellowrtse) runs this combination on a low compression smogger 400 and really likes it...boils rubber in 4 gears .   :drive:

I replaced a Performer with a Street Dom this winter past on my 383 and even though I may have lost a little bit on the bottom end, the higher end increase was so dramatically better as to completely negate it.   I still have some other tuning issues to work out (as Ron knows) but overall, the Holley intake is far superior.   I'm not talking about high rpm either.   I shift my car at 5500.
Put it this way, I'm quite shocked that the first three responses to your thread weren't offers to buy your "unwanted" Street Dominator.   They're no longer made for the 383 and with the popularity of low deck strokers they are a very hot commodity.

Thanks guys, one less thing I now need to worry about.
