Last night I was wasting some time and came across a obscure free add for a 71 Charger RT. Askiing price was $10,000 and it listed some of the good with the bad. It also had the vin code which I ran and it came up as a 440-6. I thought that it had to be a scam but fired off an email with some questions. Although the engine pic in the add showed a four bbl I figured that someone had swapped out the intake and carb. I phoned the owner this morning and after a few questions made arrangements to go see the car. I drove 4 1/2 hours down.

The first thing I checked was the vin and it was a "U" NOT a V   :brickwall:

The car was nicely optioned but previous rust repairs were everywhere, fender tags and build sheets MIA,Heavy- Duty bondo covering who knows what and a HOLE in the frame (which had been described in the add)

I shook his hand, thanked him for his time and drove 4 1/2hrs home empty handed.

I know I know .....................................here's some pics

Here's some of the patches, Note one of the patches has a factory sticker over it

At least you didn't send him $$ and buy it sight unseen.  The dash VIN looks like regular pop rivets are holding it down as well.

Nice lookin' car, looks like fj6.

greatwn73

I noticed the rivets too but the rad support did match. The engine did not.

Looked like a nice car for the price, those '71 R/T's don't grow on trees.

I don't know....10 Gs sounds reasonable for that car.....you wouldn't have been able to touch that car for less then 25K a year or so ago.......looks like a good deal to me. They only made like 3500 R/Ts in 71.

10k does not sound bad at all for that car if it had been a V code at that price I would have been verry leary, I have seen 71RT projects with 10k asking price.  You may have been able to get it for less after explaining his V was a U and the significants of that.  Heck I am interested in that car as I am sure several on here would be.  If you are not going to pursuit it would you mind posting some contact info and location?

Guys the pictures make the car look a lot better than it is. The owner even has a "spare" 71 body shell for sale (can you say rebody). If you want send me a PM and I'll try to answer what you need to know.

I have no interest in this car but if I can help someone who does I'd be glad to. Just like TUFCAT did for us last year.

Thanks for the info I will pm you tonight, (I can't pm from work)  :shruggy:were is the car located?

:iagree:   You could have parted it out for more than 10 grand then. Looks like patch work in both rear wheel wells.
