I am picking up a date 12/67 318 where would the VIN be on the block to ID whatit came out of, also to see if it matches the tranny?

The front of the block will have the engine serial number, the VIN (if it has one) will be stamped in a machined flat just above the pan gasket on the passenger side of the block or on the top rear of the block where it mates to the transmission.

A December '67 casting date would be a '68 model year block and '68 VIN stampings were spotty; some have it, some don't.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
