So I just bought my first house. A small little detached backsplit with a single car garage. Good little place. I dont wana leave my charger at my parents house but it the problem is that it doesn't quiet fit in the garage.

I'd leave it at my parents house but I'm thinking of attempting a complete resto on it. Plus things happen to find there way to the garbage at my parents house... Like the used mini starter i bought  :brickwall:

Is it possible to maybe add 4-5 feet to the length of my garage  :popcrn: Any other options?

NO NO NO!!

You need to take out the plasma cutter and make the charger smaller  :2thumbs: Thats another reason why the "Mini" starter didnt work..cars just to big.

Whats the garage made out of?

Dave22443

Honestly?  If you are considering restoring the car and doing much of the work yourself, you should probably consider building a seperate detached garage.

Heck, a guy near me just went out and purchased a pre-fab barn style shed that was 12' x 24' with a roll-up door on one end.  Added a quick ramp, wiring and some lights and presto!  He had a self contained completely secure work space for his car.

a complete resto? You need at least a double car. Where is all the parts gonna go when they come off......tools etc ..bla bla bla.

I got a shed and a basement :P

I live in the burbs... I cant build a prefab barn hehe That would be cool though.

Buy another house... preferrably an old hobby farm with a barn, about 10 acres of land and plenty of outbuildings  :nana:

:scratchchin:  As a car guy I don't care about bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. etc.  :rotz:  I only care about the garage.  :icon_smile_big:  I actually would take a tape measure and make sure I've got room at the last few houses we looked at to rent. Man, I am anal.  How much room is there from the setback of the property line to your garage ?  I think you can go up to within 3 ft of the line. But codes are different everywhere so check with the county. Good luck.

It sucks in my city. Your garage cannot be more square fotage than the first floor of your house. So You gotta have a big house to have a big garage  :icon_smile_blackeye: I have 26 X 32 attached and a 26 X 32 in back. I still could use more room to do the resto out back. I was gonna build a barn style when I built the one out back but it cant be taller than the house  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Take it to Jack Layton's house. I bet he's got lots of extra room.

Skip 68 is right, you can add on if your lot is big enough where you need it.

You need to check out the requirements of the jurisdiction you are in (Village, City, County).
If you are in a subdivision the plat will usually show the setbacks. They vary from what lot line they are measured from and with each jurisdiction.

Best to go to the planning and zoning department of your jurisdiction and talk to them about it.

And after you add on to your garage the time and money you spent could have went into the Charger.  Now you are delayed that much more in doing your restoration.  I'm having that debate right now.  Do i spend $6,000 on a garage addition so i have room to work, because that $6000 goes a long ways towards my Charger restoration.  :Twocents:

What is a detached backsplit?  A split level home with a detached single car garage?  Can you post up a picture of your garage for us?

Detached split level home. The garage is attached to the house... The garage is about 5 feet short of fitting the charger in there....There is a small room that they built in the garage. If I knock it down it will fit.. But barly and it would be ridculus to work in.

I'd restore it at my parents house but they are thinking of moving and I dont wana get started and then gotta pick it up and move it in pieces... Plus I dont wana have to hear them nag me bout getting it done.

Maybe I should just save $$ for now and send it out to be restored. But I get a feeling that even a car with a body as solid as mine I'm looking at at least $10,000 prob more for a complete resto no? If I did that id prob yank the engine and do that myself. Would just want the body, wiring and interior done

I think he meant restore the paint.  As in, "It'll buff out."   :buff:

i spent $ 10K on a black lacqure paint in 1989... nearly 20 years ago now...
what's the rate of inflation since then adjusted?..

Dave22443

I painted mine myself 2 years ago, but it still cost me $1500 in supplies.

I am sending the final body and paint out.....not much to do so I hope that will be around 5K. For me to rebuild everything else myself I will spend at least 15K Example:
suspension & brakes with some upgrades 2K.
Interior 2K.
Wiring 1K.
Dash & instrument work 1K.
Tires & wheels 1K.
Body parts & materials 2K.
Rotissorie 1,300.
Bumpers rechromed emblems 1K.
Drivetrain rebuild 2K
Exhaust 1K
Etc. Etc. Etc.......

For someone else to do what I am doing around 20-50K.....and most will still say  ::) ::) ::) alot more.

I would tear down that wall then and keep the Charger at your house.  I did the "resto at my parents place" thing and it just doesnt work very well.

Keep driving the car as is, and keep saving up for the paint job to be done by a body shop.  You can do the wiring yourself, its not that hard and you have all the direction you need from the guys on this great site.  The interior is not that hard also, i would sub out the headliner and seat covers, but laying down carpet and installing door panels is easy.   :Twocents:

Dave22443

Actually, installing new seat cover and headliners is pretty easy too.

I look at car restoration the same way I look at computers.  You can't be afraid of it.  I always try it myself first before going to the pro's.  I figure, I was going to pay them anyway, whats the harm in trying it myself first to see if I can save a few bucks towards more parts  :2thumbs:

I  think I've come up with a conculsion that can allow me to keep the room and still fit the car in my garage.. Might take a bit of modification to the floor.  I figure im already going to have to move the car in and out to do most of my work anyways but this will allow me to park it. I'll get some pics with details in a bit...
