I've been a ham radio operator since 1992. I am now getting back into it and wanting to further upgrade my license. I have been in the process of building an old school Kenwood setup. Using some old radios I had and some new/used ones I have bought. I've about got things setup.  I have been playing with my new HF rig a Kenwood TS-530s. Its a mid 1970's rig with tube finals for transmitting while the rest of it is solid state.

I was listening to the 20 meter band today thinking I was hot poopoo with my setup when a station came in and he was clearly running the show making contacts from all over the place. He then said to check out his web site.

Dude trucks around in his jet and talks HF while he is in flight. The plane updates the web site with its location and you can watch him slide across the US as he talks. He went from Austin to Denver while i was listening and then ended up in New York this evening.

If I could only win the lottery! HAHA!

I would love to set up a good HF rig but one of the joys of living here is SoCal and in an association is no antennas.  Add that to the fact that I live in a canyon area, and you get bupkis for and airwave activity.  Heck, the wife has to go upstairs just to get a bad cell phone signal.
A lot of the older ham gear is real nice. I really like tube gear (I have a bunch of tube audio gear).  If I ever get out of here and back home to Spokane I want to upgrade my license and put in a nice HF setup myself.  Have a brother who lives in south america, so would be fun  to be able to chat.
My pappy has been a ham for quite awhile wb7wps (he also used to fly small aircraft) so will get a real kick out of the site.  Thanks for the post and link

I am about out of room at my little house for antenna's outside. I still have a few I would like to put up.

Heres a picture of my setup right now. I still have one radio like on the left in the shop and another one in the mail. I am looking for a Kenwood ts-600 or 660 6 meter unit to complete the installation.

You don't have to win the lottery, just become a commercial pilot.

He flies someone else's plane and is probably not clearing more than 60 grand.  He works for an aircraft shares company flying a gulfstream plane for them.  I have a good friend who does that flying Cessna Citation jets for citationshares.
I ain't got time for pain, the only pain I got time for is the pain i put on fools how don't know what time it is.

Long, long time ago my Cobra had "goofy channels".  I also had a 500 watt solid state bilinear amp.  I was up in Issaquah, Wa. and corresponded w/ my Mom's boyfriend in Dallas, Tx.  It was pretty cool listening to folks in Panama, etc.
When I first ran the big amp I had just a fiberglass antenna and it burned the tips off, ended up with the oil filled beer car single antenna later.
It was funny, when I cranked up the amp the odometer would start clicking off mileage sitting still.

Cool set up (toys) Todd.  That monitor is like so 80's.

I have always wanted to get Technicians Class license to operate a Ham Radio. :yesnod:

Until then, CB's.
Easy fix, join the navy in about 4 years and become an aircrewman on the latest ASW platform they have going at the time.  P-3's are dying but I'm thinking they are coming out with a P-8(737 jet) version.  I always said if they brought that in I'd quit flying, well I retired so it doesn't matter.  t-56's(turbo prop)and the ARC -161 for me baby. :2thumbs: :icon_smile_cool:

Had tons of fun talking to everyone around the world on them 13 hour burners.

MacDill MacDill :icon_smile_big:   Those IFR supplements were a blast to rifle through at 0200 and bug anyone I could.(Of course that is when the NAVCOM wasn't looking or made the mistake of letting me do his job so he could rest)...no problem i'll make the pos report sir :2thumbs:_

I've even got some multi engine time logged in my logbook for flying the P-3 back from Italy back in the day.(and no, the auto pilot was not engaged :nana:)  He actually said, at the "Planeside" brief, we actually have 4 pilots on board not 3(I must have grew another 10 feet and had my choice of any chick I wanted on board after that one :2thumbs:)  My PPC was an instructor in his civi job so he logged it in. MINT!!!

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

We've done some more upgrading. I am waiting on one more radio to get here friday for the hole I got left.

Top left is a Kenwood TS-700SP with matching SP-70 speak. Then 2 Kenwood 7950 radios for packet/APRS

Top right is 2 Kenwood TS-700A radios with matching TS-70 speakers.

Down below is my Kenwood TS-530S  HF rig with matching speaker and antenna tuner.

The radio I am waiting on is a Kenwood TS-780  2 meter/440mhz setup.

All radios are 1970's vintage and into the very early 80's.

We had a "Radios in the Park" last weekend.  Used the old 47 to haul and setup an old radio station for demostation.

Wow Todd! Thats one hell of a set-up!

In my Truck I have a Galaxy DX99V 10 Meter, An Astatic Noise cancelling Mic, and a set of Wilson 2000 Trucker Antennas. Its a pretty sweet set-up for a truck!
