Engine guys, if you wanted to get a set of aluminum heads for a mildly built 440 that will see street use only but want good HP what would you get for heads ( indy,eddy,440 source ). I don't want to do any porting, I really would like to get a set of heads that I can buy and just bolt on :2thumbs: I've read about the 440 source heads and every one says they need a valve job and this and that. Does anyone make a head that I can just bolt on. Alan

NO... they all need to be checked...

In many cases you can simply bolt them on and go, but you still want to look at them first. If nothing else you want to make certain that all of the locks and keepers have been assembled correctly. Most heads come through with some kind of a valve job, it's just not a good one usually.
In my opinion, any preassembled head should be broken down, inspected, and worked if necessary prior to use  :Twocents:

I understand that that the heads should be inspected before I install them but, doesn't anyone sell a set of heads with a good vale job and good parts !! So all I have to do is check them out and then install, and not have to send them to a machine shop and send more $$ on them !! Alan

Alan, most mass production assembly line stuff is not spot on from the factory.  :P

You could have the heads drop shipped to your favorite machine shop for inspection....then shipped to your home.  ;)

On something as important as a cylinder head it's not worth taking a chance, inmho

Ron, what do you think is a better head, Indy 0r eddys I know the 440 source heads are the lest $$ wize. For the money what would be the better heads ? I've heard of Dwayne porter and I think he is an Indy dealer but I can't remember the name of his shop I think its in VT, if I went with Indy I would go with him. Alan

Both great heads. But as said before, have them checked. I think I read somewhere that Dwayne also deals the Eddy's.

For most street use motors you can't beet the Eddy's.

Alan, each head has it's own place in the cylinder head pecking order. One head might flow more but not be the best choice for your application. The Indy EZ's are better suited to very hot street/strip builds on a 440 cube engine. The larger intake port volume will slow down the velocity (air speed) and can make the throttle response lazy at lower engine speeds.

On a 440 i prefer a smaller 210-220cc port that's efficient, flows well and makes strong off idle throttle response. :2thumbs:

Another consideration is the header choice....the angled plug heads can be a pain with the wrong headers. The Eddys are angled plug as are the Indy EZ's.

The stealth's and MP 452's are both strait plug design that will work with any header that bolts up to a stock head. If you allready have a set of headers that you're happy with....this will be your best choice.

The MP 452 aluminum castings are basicly an Edelbrock rpm w/o the angled plug and perform the same. The Stealths are descent but won't make as much power out of the box as any of the others.

One of our members swapped on a set of the MP 452's along with a cam swap and picked up 65 rwhp on a less than ideal low compression 440....i'd say they work pretty good !  :icon_smile_big:

Here's the thread :  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,35295.0.html

Dwayne did the prep work on Bob's 452's....nuthin too fancy ; corrected valvejob, backcut valves and checked valveguide clearance. Definately worth the effort.  :2thumbs:

Check out BRODIX B1BS  :2thumbs:

Koffels place.

I understand the price is quite reasonable these days, and they are by far the best quality "out of the box" I've seen lately.

Thanks for all the info guys I'm going to call Dwayne and talk to him and see what he says :2thumbs: Ron, I was looking at the MP 452's because I have hooker comp headers. I also checked out the thread you linked, his build is almost the same as mine but I have the 2355 pistons ( I think, they have the 4 reliefs in them ) so the MP 452's my be the heads I want :2thumbs: Thanks guys, Alan
