Mallory Unilite Ignition Module (info and test)

I'm starting this thread because there doesn't seem to be much info here regarding these modules, and I've had problems with mine more than once. My Charger had the Mallory ignition conversion kit already installed when I bought it. I've had a tough time getting info on these, and finding replacement parts. Summit Racing sells them if you're looking. They sell the upgrade kits, or you can buy the module separately (about $100 after shipping for me. Part MAA-605). They also have instruction manuals in .PDF on the website.

TEST:

Most places that test modules say that they can't test these, but the process is actually quite easy. You just need a multi-tester and a credit card (the card will come in handy later if the module doesn't work). If you're not getting spark and you've got this upgrade, start by testing the module. (also note that certain Mallory coils have ballast built into them, and therefore don't require the external ballast resistor. They are very specific about which coil models though, so make sure you've got the right one.) Remove the cap, the rotor, and the cover to reveal the module. You should have three wires Hot, Ground, and Coil. The HOT wire should show 12v or thereabouts with the ignition turned on. Now test the COIL wire by sliding a credit card or similar object between the module's light sensors. The voltage should drop from 12v down to about 2.5v. That's it. If the lights are blocked, voltage is down. Otherwise 12v. If it does this, its working. My last module was putting out closer to 7.5v for some reason, and it didn't matter if the light sensors were blocked or not. I replaced it and I'm back on the road.

Warning! Please take proper precautions when working around the coil! Don't touch the coil wiring, especially when the ignition is on. There's enough voltage there to stop your heart.

There is an Accel module that is the same as the Mallory, but cost about half as much. They are 100% interchangeable.
