So, what's it like in Indiana?

How many members have we from Indiana? There's a guy I work with who really talks it up and has plans to move back there in the next five years or so. My wife spent a semester there at Goshen College before we met and she said it was nice except for the cold winters and lack of landscape (mountains). I got to looking at some real estate listings this morning and discovered I can get 2-3 times the house for about half the money compared to my current location near Portland, Oregon, which basically means that if I could sell my house here for its appraised value I could almost buy a house outright in certain parts of Indiana. That or have a payment of around 1/3 what I'm paying now and cut the term from 30 to 15 years.

Are there any decent jobs there? According to my coworker there's actually more jobs than there are workers to fill them. :shruggy:

I've lived in Southern Indiana for the last seven years. My wife and I really like it.

Housing and the job market varies dramatically from region to region. The Evansville area where I live has weathered the economic downturn fairly well, but I certainly wouldn't say there a job surplus. Housing market is very slow.

I live in Southern Indiana as well, Columbus area, where it flooded actually.  Indianas not too bad, not much to see or do, weather changes in 15 minutes(not kidding)  If you live south of Indianapolis, dont count of the TV stations to cover your area even if a Tornaode is on the ground(from expereience) All and all, i like indiana, they arent too strict on gun laws and most counties dont conduct emissions tests, things like that.

I live just south of Indianapolis, and its not all that bad. Having lived in a few different states, they are all pretty much the same once you get settled in. Having lived in Indiana, North Carolina, Florida, Illinois, and California, as well as Thailand everywhere is a little different. Granted not much scenery up in the northern part of the state, but there are hills in the southern part of the state. And some very pretty rolling hills just south of the midsection of the state. Winters are pretty mild compared to the other regions around the great lakes, and the summers aren't too bad either. Not sure on the whole housing market right now, I know its down from where it was a few years back (hence the reason for leaving the construction side of things), but there are plenty of jobs around if your willing to do some work.

Shakey

I've been to IN a few times and I don't think it's bad.  I like the landscape, farms etc. and the people are all very nice.  I'll be there again in August and plan on stopping at St. Elmo's Steakhouse for dinner.  One of the best in the United States IMO!

My '68 Charger came from Corydon, Indiana. I know because I went there to get it.   :D

It was a nice ride through the state, & the Corydon area seemed very nice, but that wouldn't be enough info to go on for buying a house.

I live in Indianapolis, stay away from here as the Indy city county council has made it a shame to be in this city.

That said, when my GF and I move it will be to a small town but still in Indiana.

I've been around the world, to all 50 states and the only other state I would even consider is Alaska.

We are home to some of the greatest race tracks in the world :drool5:

In the southern part of the state is some breath taking scenery, not quite mountains but a good variety of topography. Great hunting and fishing (just don't fish the white river from south of Ft. Wayne to Evansville).

We have a couple of nice reservoir areas (Lake Monroe is the largest), several state forestries and the Hoosier National Forest.

On the down side, most of the home prices are a reflection of the times. Overbuilt, over priced empty subdivisions and McMansions.

As far as jobs, the state is constantly complaining about the "Brain Drain" ( young college Grads taking jobs in and talents to other states) as it isn't considered glamorous to live here. I am a mechanic and tradesman and I don't have a shortage of work.

In the small towns and rural areas the people are friendly but shy and slow to warm up to outsiders.

The Indianapolis Mopar club is one of the finest anywhere Indy Mopar Club

And we are the home state of John Dillinger and Charlie Manson.

:scratchchin: Well, things to think about. :scratchchin: Around here you walk across town on the heads of hippies without touching the ground and I think there are more cars and people than there are trees and animals (and there's lots of trees and animals). I'm pretty much ready for small town America again.

Charged

To me personally, theres NOTHING in Indiana except for corn. I lived in Chicago and now I live in Louisville, both cities touch Indiana. Been around the place my entire life and yet again, its barely any better than Nebraska or Kansas. In Louisville we call Hoosiers "corn-billies"

No no, come to Kansas City.  ;)

We are a super bunch of Charger guys out here. Whatever your vocation you can find a good job here.
Homes are fair priced and the Winters are not as harsh as Indiana.

I haven't seen any hippies around here, they mush have killed them off in the 70ds.

The Town of Newburgh is nice, not to large, but still has a lot of conveniences. There's a house on my dead end street for sale, & I lower the stereo after 2 AM.

Once upon a time......

A Kentuckian was standing on the Louisville side of the ohio river, pondering how to get across.

A hoosier on the other side asked him what he was doing, The kentuckian responded with his desire to cross the river without getting wet.

The hoosier kindly offered to shine his flashlight so that the kentuckian could walk across on the beam of light.

The Kentuckian just laughed and said no thanks, as he just knew that hoosier would turn off the flashlight when he was halfway across.

Things that Indiana has that kentucky doesn't:

1) Smart people

2) it is actually encouraged to marry outside the immediate family

3) Homes that aren't on wheels

4) Championship sports teams

5) Indoor plumbing

6) Paved roads

On that note, it's also been said that hoosiers are kentuckians that got lost on the way to michigan

Hoosiers like kentuckians, we gave them a college basketball championship in 1976 (oh wait, that was the refs that did that, my bad.)

It's true, Kentuckians are so said all the time even their grass is blue (blew?)

Bull, I live in Fort Wayne (the second largest city in Indiana). I have lived here my entire life, except for my time in Columbus at Ohio State. I do enjoy living here. The winters can suck. A 4X4 vehicle is very nice to have during those months.

But summers around here are great. It is a lot of fun to go to car shows at these small town fairs.

Cost of living here is among the lowest in the country.

I will here people say "well there is not much to do". But I always have plenty to keep me busy. If you are ready to live in "the real America", Indiana just might be for you.

Hello Everyone! I'm born and raised a Hoosier. Originally from Logansport, In. Moved to Anderson in 1970. Lots of Mopars around here. I have friends with 1970 'Cudas, 1971 'Cudas, 1971 Hemi Chally, 1971 Chally convert 440-6, I own a 1970 Charger R/T 440-6. I have seen a bunch of Mopars around here! Nice place to live I think! GM is all but gone around here, but our economy is starting to come back around. I own an auto repair/tire center in town and I need a good tech right now! Hard to find good qualified workers! Cost of living is low and it's a "buyers market" right now in the housing business. Winters are loooong, but that gives us more time to perfect our Mopars!  Take care!!  Jeff

I live just south of Indianapolis in Greenwood. I have only been here 2 years. I grew up all over the northeast, my childhood in Connecticut and much of the rest in Maine (with some breaks in Michigan, New York, and North Carolina). I love this area. People bitch about the taxes, but its still cheaper to live here than almost anywhere in the northeast. The jobs pay better too. I convinced my brother to move down as he had a dead end job in Maine and no prospects for another office job. He found a great job here within 2 months that will likely be the last job as it is a solid company and has plenty of room to grow. Plus he makes more than double what he did up north.

My work is mostly via the net so there has been no big change for me in that regard.

Lots of great mechanics and body guys around. It is easy to get some great quality work around here for reasonable money.

1 mile north of me is Indianapolis, two miles south is the rural Whiteland area. In Maine I lived in the foothills, just about an hour and a half from Mount Washington. I know mountains. If I need to see some hills, I go down to Monroe county and it feels like home. It is crazy to basically be within 30 minutes from a country hike, a good museum, venues for sports and concerts, or a plain old bar.

Winters are easy here for a northerner. The towns just don't know how to handle snow removal making the roads messier than they should be. That is a problem as people here don't know how to drive in the winter. Most act like its no different than a summer day and end up hitting ice and crashing. The drivers around here kind of suck, but are worlds better than massachusettes drivers. In my area the time doesn't seem to make sense. In the winter there are days the sun isn't up until almost 9 am. This area should be on the central time zone and probably not be on the daylight saving time system.

Funny, I was looking at houses for sale in both Ft. Wayne and Decatur the other day with my wife. I can get three times the house and land for about half what my current house is valued at.

Nice towm reminds me of where I grew up. However the BRC plant wasn't very nice! Somebody should clean that place up and paint it or something. Always saw a lot of Mopars lurking around in that area during my drives.
