I'm stuck, how do you remove the tail housing from the main body?  I've removed all the bolts and the seal.  There is a clip in the middle that we can't seem to figure out.  Is that all that's holding it together?  How DO we get that disengaged and out?!

Too many beers on our part?

there is a plate on the bottom near the trans mount with 2 Phillips screws , remove that & spread the snap ring under the plate

We did that, but can't get the housing to move; while we spread it.  :flame:   :brickwall:

If all of the bolts are removed and the snap ring is spread sufficiently and it won't come off the gasket is holding it. Time to get mean and do some intelligent prying/hammering.

BTW, place the shifter in Park and rotate the output shaft until you hear the park sprag click into place; this will make the final removal easier (after the gasket lets go).
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Is the snap ring supposed to be pushed out of it's groove after it's spread, or do you have to spread it and pull the shaft at the same time?

This tranny has been sitting for quite some time, I'm thinking it'll cost more to fix than to get a different functional tranny..  One from a running car that hasn't been sitting too long.  I sort of expected all this.  The 440 I got with this 727 was seized, some pistons had to be hammered out; took a couple cases of beer and a couple months.

Thanks for the help.  I wanted to make sure there wasn't something obvious that the beer had made us overlook..   ;D

the snap ring has to be help spread open while the tailhousing is slide back
