A904 shift question?

Last winter I installed a TF-2 kit in my 904 trans. Then I installed a Hurst V-matic and began to torture my transmission this summer.
The first thing I noticed was that it up shifted super fast, so I adjusted the kick down linkage until it was better but not great.
Then I started to notice that when cold it would wind up to 4000 rpm before it shifted into 3rd, once it shifted though it would work fine after that.
I also noticed that it wont downshift when I come to a stop, so it would start out in 3rd. If I sat at a stop light long enough it would start out in 1st but most of the time it wont.
So I have been using the ratchet function of my Hurst to manually shift, does this hurt anything?

I figure this winter I'll pull it out and have it fixed, but I'd like to go through the summer with it.

It won't hurt anything to force it to downshift at a stop by shifting to "1". Possible causes for your problem are a faulty governor or a stuck 2-3 shift valve (most likely).

The governor is easy to check with a test gauge plumbed into the test port on the tailhousing, with the shifter in D and the wheels not turning the gauge should read 0-2 psi, anything over 2 psi is a problem. The only way to check the shift valve is to pull and disassemble the valve body.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thank you John
I think I'll pull the valve body and take a look, I've had it out once already since I put the TF2 in last winter, not much of a hassle when you have a drain plug in the pan.
