Bluesmobile or General Lee?

So, why arent Bluesmobile clones as popular as General Lees? It would actually be easier to find 74 Monacos than Chargers in some places. And why ruin a good Charger in the first place? I actually like the Bluesmobile just a bit better.

There may be some people that appreciate a Bluesmobile, but they tend to be a selected group of "Adults. " ...... Don't get me wrong, it's a cool car, from a cool movie!

The thing is, (IMHO) people of ALL ages, backgrounds, income levels, etc......just gravitate to a G.L......... Maybe it's something about wholesome, good times that we used to know.

The best part with our General Lee, is a kid (or kids) running up to our car, and saying, "Daddy, Mommy, look it's a General Lee!" Makes my day! And then we hear, "Can we get a picture?"

I'd love to find a decent '74 Dodge Royal Monaco (preferably with a tan interior too).


But I'd want to make it into a Georgia-era Hazzard County PD car just as much as a Bluesmobile.  I think I need two of these cars.

Actually, there are Bluesmobile clones out there. I know a guy who once owned a Monaco and intended to clone it into a Bluesmobile but the impracticality of the project (and his wife) pretty much put an end to it.

They didnt produce the Royal Monaco until '75. Until them it was the Custom Monaco.

The movie is great but the car never did anything for me    The General Lee on the other hand is a Charger, nuff said

I am not a fan of the car, but I did shop for a Monaco to give my father as he drove a 1976 Royal Monaco for 25 years. In 2002 it took a hit on the passenger side and it was totalled, and he misses it. Decent Monacos are very hard to find. Much harder than 2nd generation Chargers. Most of these cars ended up in the crusher during the 80's and have a very small survival rate.

I see decent 4-door American cars that age that are still changing hands for $600 out in the southwest desert states.  That's where you wanna look.


You could probably get one cheap especially now that gas is going up.  Those things are big enough to land planes on the trunklid and they're all carb'd V8s of some sort.

General Lee gets my vote but I grew up on the Dukes.

plus the general is typically in glossy orange, where as the bluesmobile is typically, sad to say, looks like a piece of crap (matt black paint in poor condition) and doesn't have a 'wow' factor like the general.

cant compare a 4 door monaco to a 69 charger in any shape or form.  sorry.  General Lee all the way.

  I've had 10 Chargers so next time, maybe a Bluesmobile. I could have bought a real one 4 yrs. ago cheap, but I passed. It was a real Calif. CHP '74 w/ a 440 cop shocks & all the rest. Running driving, that huge 100 alt. Black & white, I should have bought it.

I guarantee there's still a ton of these things out there.  There's just no hobby/enthusiasm around them among the mainstream public to bring them to the light of day. 

Whatever the fullsize sedans lost to being less-often saved than Chargers, they've probably made up for by being less-often crashed and having higher original production numbers.

The lack of demand has been the reason why they have been crushed (how many 1982 Escorts are out there now?). Even when they were less than 10 years old nobody wanted them, and they were usually crushed soon after being junked. Just like the station wagons and vans. Still out there? Yeah, but few are worth a damn.

GL for the win.

Every ex cop car or old beat up dilapidated land barge that happens to be blue gets nicknamed the Bluesmobile.      I don't desire any of them.    Good movie?  yes... greatest?  NO.

Yeah the GL wins the desirability contest obviously. 


But I'd still love a '74 Monaco if it didn't take Charger-level money invested just to make it decent.
