What's it cost to have a motorcycle gas tank repaired?

I'm looking at getting a V45 or V65 Magna and I found a V45 here local that sounds as if it's in fair shape except the guy dropped something on the tank and it's got a couple good-sized dents (see pics). Anyone ever have to repair a gas tank? What might I end up spending?

MichaelRW

If you brought me the tank off the bike I'd charge 3 hours body labor ($165), materials $41 & paint BC/CC $150 for a total of $356 plus tax on the materials.

Bull, I just checked eBay and there are some tanks selling for about $100. Just something to consider...

Repairable yes, but a new tank is the way I would would go. Ebay or try the used bike shop, I'm sure they'd have a tank if not a new tank to sell you.
*Bent Bike* in Fife,WA. for starters. Also, I understand Mike owns a body shop, but nobody ever does an estimate w/o seeing what needs to be done first.

True, but since it's only a bike tank the estimate could not be too far off. Now a whole car is another story. BTW, one of the most frustrating parts of this business is getting calls literally every day asking to estimate repairs for a vehicle over the phone without seeing the vehicle.  :pullinghair:

Yea, I have to go with the replace it comments and a salvage yard or ebay. Be sure you check to make sure the inside of any tank you buy to replace it isn't rotted (rusted).

You could probably buy the tank from Honda new for the estimate above. Check with a shop, there just might still be a part on a shelf somewhere.

I'll ask Honda but I wouldn't think they'd have a new tank for a 26-year-old bike. :shruggy:

Definitely look inside the tank for rust. They can often look pristine from the outside, but be full of rust on the inside. That bike also has a smaller tank under the seat, so check for rust there too.
I checked with Honda on a "Candy Maroon" color (your color pictured looks to be non-stock). They are currently backordered, but still available for order. They retail for $625.15! :o
Here's a pic of the tanks...

BTW, I'm gonna give you a bit of my opinion here...I wouldn't take a V65 Magna if you paid me! That bike is about the most ill handling bike ever made. Makes a V-max look like a 900 Ducati in the handling department. I haven't ridden a V45 yet, so I can't attest for their handling quirks. They don't have as much power as a V65, so you can't get into trouble as easily at least. I do know that they gained a reputation for eating cam's, though.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Actually I'd much rather have a V-Max anyway. I fell in love with those the first time I saw them but I've always liked the V65s and V45s too. But I wouldn't own any bike very long if I did buy one because I'm hoping to start flipping them to make money for the Charger resto. I know a couple guys that do it and they're making some pretty fair side money. Between that and some overtime here and there at work I might make enough to finish it (in a few years). :eek2:

In that case, have at it! ;D I'm sorta doing the same thing lately, but with cars...daily driver types. I've made about 2 grand with two cars, so far. It's involved a lot of wrenching & spit-shining, but it's something I can do in my spare time while the weather's warm.

I've thought about doing it with cars too but that would definitely be a fair-weather thing since I don't have a roof over my RV pad. The bikes I could work on indoors after I unload some extra car parts.

Nothing worth getting excited about. Just some big stuff that takes up room like a spare 383 block and a pair of chrome modular wheels with tires. I just need some room in that one corner of the garage.
