hi Guys

i'm working on my new 69 superbee . when i got it , it wasn't charging. i looked at the alt and it had a ear broken off it and the case was cracked . so i installed a new one. still didn't charge. so i installed a new voltage regulater . now it's charging BIG TIME . close to 15 volts . and the amp gauge gets pinned when i step on the gas. all the lights are real bright. now i'm starting to smell melting wires in the car. so i'm not gonna run her again until i fix the problem .
should i go buy a new voltage regulater ?  that seems to me like it should be the problem. what do you guys think it could be. Thanks Rene

I figure it's the regulator because that's what it's suppose to do-regulate.  You know, I believe some parts stores can actually test  those things.  Even if they can't, it's a cheap part to buy and thus save your electrical system.

By the way, what type regulator and alternator are you running?  The "points" type or electronic regulator?  Single or dual field 'alt?

start the car- it's over charging---  next while it's running- disconnect the connector from the reg.- it should stop charging- if so- something is wrong.  double check to make sure that the case of the reg. has a good clean ground to the firewall. if it does- time for a better quality voltage reg!!!

Quotetime for a better quality voltage reg!!!

you are so rite . i switched regulaters with the one from my roadrunner and she's doing better . she's still charging a little high. about 14.25 volts but the amp meter is steady in the middle. with the old one , the amp meter was pinned as soon as i touched the gas . now it barely moves . the new vr is an after market one too . i just ordered 3 original americn vr. when they come, i will switch them all over. wish me luck . i'm taking the bee out on the highway today for the first time. thanks for all your help guys. I hate mysteries like that one.  Freaking electrical systems...
