Alright, I've got the gasket set in for my 8 3/4 along with the diff. ready to put in.

Did you guys use anything in addition to the gasket to seal the chunk to the case? Use something instead of the gasket altogether?

And how do I set the axle end play? I'm sticking with the Timkens for financial reasons . . .

r u askin if you should put cylicon on the pumpkin to the main axle housing?

They didn't have silicone gasket sealer when these cars were made.  So they used a gasket.  I would be tempted to use some silicone sealer myself.  That's what Mopar used on the differential cover on my 2005 Ram.  The red gasket maker.  Don't use too much.  Just enough to get the job done.  Nice thing about silicone seal is there won't be any leaks like there would with a paper gasket.  I can't advise you on the procedure for adjusting the end play.  I do know the adjuster is on the passenger side and has a lock that attaches to one of the bolts once you get the end play set.  I'll be following this thread to see how to do it myself.  Are you using a suregrip?  I wonder if the end play adjustment is different for an open versus a suregrip differential?

Right on, red RTV it is then (found an old thread where it was talked about as well.) Yeah, I took the adjuster off of the passenger side and it seems pretty simple really. I'll go down to the shop and find the FSM later and see about it. I'm using a 3.55 suregrip unit, and once again will see if there is a different in the FSM. I've got the case, backing plates, front hangers, and chunk all cleaned, painted, and ready to go back in, as well as new shackles and springs, so I'll post it all up in this thread or in my other as it comes along.

Are you using silicone on the Cork gasket? there is no need, silicone will just make it slippery and easy to squish when your are torquing it down.  :Twocents:

CHARGERMAN2007_69

trust me men i have went tru 5 gaskets without cilicon and they leaked and i put one gasket cork wit cilicon and it doesnt leak and has never leaked in 5 years :D

Go to NAPA and get the stuff called "Right Stuff"(it's black and it will seal everything)  but get a second job cause it is expensive.

as far as end play I'm looking for it as I wrestled with this myself.  I want to say 1/32 but i'm still researching for you.

just found this:

Tighten the adjuster all the way.  Tap on axel to be sure it is in all the way.  Loosen the adjuster about four notches.  Tap axle again, end play should be .013"-.023".  I always use reg bearings and find the adjusting easy after you do it a few times.

I was just looking at this TSB link about gaskets for 1974 Chargers. It shows you how to apply the sealant. http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/1974-Dodge-TSB-Index.shtml

I used the silicone on my aluminum pumpkin too.

Thank you for the information on the end play. The service manual says .013-.023" as well, so with that all I'll have to do is the procedure you mentioned and then make sure. Excellent!

As for the gasket. . .

The one I have is some kind of fiber or something it seems. I'll get a picture up later. I was under the impression that I was to use the RTV alone and eliminate the gasket. . . is this wrong? Am I supposed to use both the silicone and gasket?

BTW,

Hung the springs today. Once we figure things out in this thread I'll put the chunk in along with the axles, adjusters, gaskets, and backing plates and put the thing in the car. Can't afford the brake lines, shocks, or brake hardware yet but at least it'll be a roller again!

CHARGERMAN2007_69

its alot better to have both becouse like i said i went tru about 5 gaskets without sealer and they all leaked so the one i put on with sealer did not leak ur choice but i would go with both

Yeah, I'll get some red RTV today and have at it. I guess I'll put a bit of silicone on each side of the gasket, set the chunk in place, allow the RTV to cure, then torque it down. I think that I'm being too anal about all of this. I'll get it done today.

CHARGERMAN2007_69

k cool man wen i put the pumpkin in snugem up then wait for a couple of hours the torque em down  hey man post up a pic of ur project

Yeah I've got the case on stands with the studs facing up so after I put the RTV and gasket on I just set the chunk on there, then waited a few hours, and then torqued it down. Hopefully it'll seal alright, and we'll be finding out pretty soon when I set this thing up and get fluid in it.

CHARGERMAN2007_69

well u wanna snug the bolts up when u put the pumpkin on becouse if u just set it on there it will never seal u need some more weings so wen u put it on snugen so a little bit of silicone is leakin on the sides dnt wipe the silicone off just let it set like that for about 2 to 2 and a half hours

Ah well we'll see. Just got back from torquing it down to specs, silicone was oozing out of the sides a bit just from me setting it on there, I think it will be alright.

Here are some pictures I took earlier today as well as some others, no pictures of it bolted up (I also went ahead and put a bead of silicone around the whole thing) but that's basically it. Tomorrow I'll torque it down completely to specs and pack the bearings and put the axles in, then put it on the leafs. I have yet to clean up the shock mounts or get new u-bolts or shocks but they will be soon to come. Oh yeah, new studs going into the axles as well. Paycheck to paycheck!

71charger_fan

I put mine together in '94. No gaskets. Just Permatex Ultra Copper silicone. No leaks, no problems.

terrible one

Well, I got it all torqued down now, so it's time to get it mounted up, then put in the axles and fill it with fluid! We'll see.
