Supposedly Iowa's laws are set to change July 1st. I am totally stoked! As of right now you can only have them on if you have the correct plates in the car with you, at least thats what the old guy selling me the plates said...

Your Lucky, they just passed the law in CA that will allow us to use the old black and yellow plates starting in 7/09.  :brickwall:

It's the same here in Alberta.
It caught me completely by surprise when I saw some cars show up at the local outdoor shows with vintage plates on.
I thought they were in deep shit.

Same here in Indiana. As of the first of the year we can run 1969 plates. I bought a mint 1969 plate on E-Bay for $10.00.

So can I use my blue/yellow plates in California or is that a no no?
Leave it to Cali to come up with bs laws eh.
When I bought the car I had to argue with the dmv people for probably 10 minutes to let me keep the pink slip.  :brickwall:
Ended up keeping it "only because its no-op" so we'll see if they give me shit down the road.

We can use classic plates here in NY.....only stipulations are that the #'s cannot be in use on a standard plate & the inspection sticker on the rear plate must match that of the year of the car they're going on....only $25 a year to register the car

In SC we could use them as of March of last year.  $30  Had to be same year as car and car at least 30 yrs old.  No car age limitation and you don't even have to put the year and month stickers on the plate.   Just have to keep them with the registration and the letter from the DMV stating your approved. There is no yearly vehicle inspections for any year car.  I have them on the 68, 69, & 70 cars and they did attract a lot of attention from other car owners at the shows but surprisingly enough I have yet, after a year of having them, any cops to stop me to check them out. I feel sure that a couple that followed me for a while was calling them in.  Anyway it is pretty nice to have the same year tags and if you think that you might be going that way better try and get some good ones now before the plate sellers wise up and start raising the prices.

I haven't heard of this.

Got a link to the law passed?

I know currently if you have your original black and gold plates and can prove they were on your car in the past they will let you put them back on.
Else no dice on getting black and gold plates on your car.

I did it this year in Nebraska.  (should have a long time ago.)  It was like $89 one time fee.  AND only one plate is required instead of 2.

It's surprising that not many people know about the law changing. As such, If I were you, I'd buy a set now before the gold rush begins in 2009 on these plates. Since the law passed in 9/07 a price for a really nice set of plates (need a set in CA) has gone from $80 to about $200!

Here it is from the CA DMV website...note at the bottom....not operative until 7/1/09. Bascially, they changed the 1962 and replaced it with 1969. They really should have allowed any car 1972 and below to get the plates.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d03/vc5004_1.htm

5004.1.  (a) ( )1 (1) Subject to paragraph (3), an owner of a vehicle that is a 1969 or older model-year vehicle or the owner of a commercial vehicle or a pickup truck that is a 1972 or older model-year may, after the requirements for the registration of the vehicle ( )2 are complied with and with the approval of the department, utilize license plates of this state with the date of year corresponding to the ( )3 model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured, if the ( )3 model-year date license plate is legible and serviceable, as determined by the department, in lieu of the license plates otherwise required by this code.(2) The department may consult with an organization of old car hobbyists in determining whether the date of year of the license plate ( )4 corresponds to the ( )3 model-year date when the vehicle was manufactured.

Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 497, Stats. 2007. Effective January 1, 2008. Operative July 1, 2009.

68charger383 Thanks!

I didn't think CA was ever going to do this.

Now I gota start shopping for some plates.

I have looked into the historic plates but there are too many restrictions on using them for my liking.
I want to be able to drive my Charger when ever I want.

When I got my Charger it had blue and gold plates (Not personalized) on it which makes me think it was not an original CA car.

:iagree:  In MI it's a 10 year deal and the restriction says "Used only for events such as historical club activities, parades, and car shows."  I guess they think people are gonna drive an old beater just to save on registration?  I figured the plate was just one more reason to get pulled over by the fuzz, like there aren't enough already.  Besides, our 68 plates are green / yellow which look like shit on a red / black car.  I wish I could use one from the late 70s when they were black w/ white letters.   :icon_smile_cool:

I always felt sorry for Wisconsin people having those yellow plates, especially on the front.  A long time ago I was there and remember seeing a new Corvette with its nice aerodynamic front end - ruined by the craptastic yellow plate sticking out.   :eek2:

cool. however..what I REALLY want to run are the yellow and black 63-68 plate cause the yellow and blue 69 plate would look funky on a black car, so I wonder
if theres any way to fudge say a build date or something so I can run a 'late' 68 plate on my 'early 69 car.

like some sort of 'overlap'.

The blue and yellow CA plates didn't start until Jan 1, 1970, so '69 cars sold before then would have had black plates. Doesn't matter what year the car is, it's when it was first sold.

Also, for some silly reason, for a while after the blue plates came out, if the car was sold the black plates had to come off and blue plates had to go on.  So much for "reusing, reducing and recycling."

cool. time to hit ebay.........

Its that way in Kansas. You can get an "antique" plate when a vehicle is 35years or older. Or you can register a correct year tag as the antique tag for the vehicle.  My parts store has a connection to a guy in town here that collects plates. Rumor has it he worked at the court house. At the end of the year the old plates were thrown away.  They actually got throwed into his collection.   I bought a brand new 69 and 71 tag for my county still in the KDOT envelopes. Got them registered as antiques when the Chargers hit 35 years old.   Also found a 1947 tag for the old Dodge truck too. The 6 on it is the county's # Makes it a fun thing.

In Indiana, is it a deal where you need to use a plate year that matches your car year, or does any year old plate work?

Dans 68

If someone stumbles onto a stash of old plates (California in my case) get them and share the wealth!  :2thumbs:  Already a lot of entrepreneurs are trying to buy up all they can and probably make a killing over the next year. Bay Area's Craigslist has many looking to buy.
