that's something I'll never understand... I align them on that way but allwasy end turning 180º the distribuitor. that means really both should it be at 12:00, or dist to number 6 piston

when trying to lign up timeing marks on a unknown engine I would go by TDC #1 cylider not distibuter location.

  just in genaral #1 in the distributer is not a fixed piont because the dist position can be adjusted altering the postion on the cap.

my self I use a degree wheel and make sure nothing is off.

but it good to hear you found your problem and its fixed and running.
