I am putting a 440 in my 66 charger and got a 727 B transmission with it... the car originally came with a 361 which should of had a 727 B so I know it should fit (currently I have a 318 and a 727A).  I am looking to find out if there are different types of 727 B transmissions as the one I got with the 440 engine looks like it may not fit because there is a large "loop" on the top of the unit just before the clamp for the drive shaft.....  any guidance is appreciated!

Thanks very much!

There are different but most of the changes were internal ones.  Is there a part number on the one you have?  (check on the pan rail)

mcain

the number is 898870 5431 0873

thanks

Not quite sure.. buddy of mine gave it to me and he had no idea, he said that he thougt it was in a 72 cuda but the guy who is rebuilding it for me said he thinks it cam from a truck...... is there a way tthat I can look up the part number?

Ghoste

I'm thinking truck or motorhome from the late 70's.  John Kunkel is the trans and part number expert around here but that number isn't familiar to me and the date code puts it somewhat later in 440 production.
PM John and I'll bet he can tell you everything about it.  Is it a short tailstock?

mcain

it is a short tail stock... I will PM john,... thanks so much for your help

Ghoste

If it's the short tailstock one then you're out of luck as far as getting it to fit a Charger.  They can be changed over but you are looking at some disassembly in addition to getting the longer output shaft and tailstock housing.  You would be better in the long run to find one that fits.

mcain

thats kinda what I thouhgt... thanks again

The P/N (with a 3 added to the front) is for a '76 truck or van, should have good HD insides.

If you decide to use it by changing the output shaft and tailhousing, be careful selecting an output shaft because the spline angle for the front planetary gear changed in '76.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
