im in a debate as to how many 73-74 road runner / GTXs were made on another board . and i goto thinking the argument could be offset by knowing the total production of the 440 CHARGER

so how many 73 & 74 440HP U code CHARGERs were made

thanks RANDY  :2thumbs:

The total number combined for '73/'74 is 3,422. Seems about half of those were SE cars. If you want the exact breakdown, you can look it up on my site. But it is a feature you have to become a member to see.

If it matters, as far as the Road Runner/GTX part, Galen's book shows 749 auto, 749 4 speed cars for 73 and 386 auto for 74 (no 4 speed in 74 by his book).

that is exactly what is causing this whole mess is GALEN and his "WHITE BOOK " 1st off is the 749 # for 73 there is noway it could be 749 440 4spd cars made because you could only get the 440 with an automatic .

the DODGE & PLYMOUTH MUSCLE CAR RED BOOK shows 117 1973 rr/GTXs made and 79 1974 rr/GTXs made witch i tend to belive because these cars just do not exist in other words they are just rare although the #s do sound very very low and when compared to the the 73-74 CHARGER 440 HP U code car production #s they are majorly dwarfed .

ive been searching EBAY , TRADER ONLINE , DEALS ON WHEELS , CRAIGSLIST ect ect for the last 6 years and rarely do these cars show up anywhere a majority i have seen on EBAY and thats about it and that totals less than 50 GTXs between 73-74 .

i would think that if the 749-386 #s were fact would i see or know of more of these cars ? also between a ton of MOPAR web boards that i belong to there are less than 10 73-74 GTXs .

I tend to think the Galen numbers would be correct and that the 73 number for 4 speed cars is just a misprint.  It jumps out immediately just by virtue of being the exact same number as the number of automatic cars.  I wasn't aware of the no four speed thing so...
1100 total for both years less an attrition rate makes for a car that is seldom seen.  I don't know the Red Book source and I'm not a big Galen booster but he's pretty reliable over most other sources.

(see, now you've got it going on two forums )

QuoteThe 1973-74 models had more conventional squared-up styling with the front fenders slightly raised above and jutted forward of the hood. 1/4 mile times were getting close to the 16s and further away from "musclecar" status. The base engine for the 1973-74 models had dropped down to Chrysler's workaday 318 CID V8; however, dual exhaust was still standard. After 1972, no 440 with four speed cars were built. The 400 was the biggest engine Plymouth offered with the four speed, which could also be had with the 340 (1973) and 360 (1974) engines. I was just repeating what the article reported about the original owner's recollection while ordering his '73 Dodge Charger SE 400 4 speed car. I purposely dug out the article before posting because I have never seen a 73 or 74 440 4 speed in the flesh and didn't believe any were made. The article contradicts that theory but after 30+ years he could be mistaken in remembering it was the lack of 4 speed availability with the 440 and not A/C.

Both Sessler (red book) and the above Wikkipedia article fail to mention that the four speed was also available behind the 318 in 73 and 74.

I am looking at the fourth edition but I see where it is me misreading it.  He has 440-4 and underneath it it just says auto.  I am taking 440-4 to mean 4 speed because auto is underneath it.  I just now realized that it means 440- four barrel and then the single transmission option broken down under it.  In 74, he has it all on one line so it's a small thing but just enough to cause some confusion apparently.
I'm going to guess here that rav440 is making the same mistake I did when looking at it?
