Installing HP Exhaust Manifolds

Getting rid of the headers and installing the HP manifolds on my 1971. I'm new to engine work. The exhaust manifold gasket has a what looks like a metal coating on one side of it. Does this metal side go towards the head or manifold?

Are you sure? On the Fel-pros I have always put the metal side towards the manifolds.

On my '68 I kept having problems with the gaskets leaking after a year otr two of being on the car. This was despite having the manifolds plained down and checking to see that everything was flat. I just bought a set of graphite gaskets from Remflex and put them on. They are supposed to be better at sealing. Haven't driven the car much so I don't know how they'll hold up but I pretty familiar with gaskets from work and these seem very well made & should work quite well. Only disadvantage is cost (about 3Xs). Check them out at Remflex.com. Might be worth looking into.

I have the Fel-Pro gaskets. Can anyone else chim in? So far we have 1 vote towards the head and the other towards the manifold. Thanks

i bought gaskets from NAPA, they are holding up fine...the way i installed them, is looking at them from the stamped side, out, meaning you can see how they are stamped, where one side has a rounded edge, and the other has a flat edge, i installed the flat edge towards the head..

also if your installing them, you'll need the 3 longer nut's for going thru the thick part on the manifold, i think it's 2 long ones on the one manifold, and one shorter one on the other........drivers side one had the 2 longer ones i think???   

it's also a good time (since you have them out) to re-seal the studs, i just used RTV and it's also working fine, no leaks at all.  Nothing would pi$$ you off more than installing them and having a stud or two leak.

I found this on the Fel-Peo site. It says "Install the gasket with the steel face toward the manifold and the fiber surface against the head." It even says the reason they are mounted like that.

simply... don't use the gasket... MaMopar never installed from fact. Try to find a Mopar gasket and enever will find. Just some complete kist carries them... Just use High Temp silicone and will run fine! I DO and no probs.

hmmmmmm thats intresting stuff  ,  , well i have always put the tin side  facing the hotest part , on any type of exhaust gasket for over 20 years , & never had a problem , but that is intersting the info from Fel-pro , as thats what i've got on there now , no leaks as of yet ,    , ................

I always thought the manifold was the hottest part? The head has cooling right? I am obviously no expert so I'm making an assumption here.
