What would you do if you got a free paycheck? You didn't do any work for a company that deposited money into your bank account like clockwork... for almost five years. Welcome to Anthony Armatys's world. Anthony accepted a job with telecommunications company Avaya Inc. in 2002. But he changed his mind and never went to work for the company. Yet a recordkeeping error meant that he started receiving regular payroll deposits into his bank account until the error was discovered in early 2007.

All told, he received about $469,000 from Avaya and never whispered a word of it to the company. He also withdrew about $1,900 that was in a company retirement account. Now he's being charged with one count of theft by deception.

What ever happened to doing the right thing? Who in their right mind thinks it's okay to steal money from a company for almost five years? I'm sure there are some who can justify this in their minds... reasoning that the only victim is a big corporation. But we all know it's wrong. Heck, I even give back the money when a cashier gives me a dollar too much change. Where have our morals gone?

this was a job that would have payed him over 90K a year.  Stands to reason that when he changed him mind, that he got a similar paying job.  you would think someone who was to be paid that level of salary would be smart enough to know that someone somewhere would fnd the mistake and that all of the trail would lead back to this loser.

I had somehing similar happen to me.  The company I just left, Direct TV, started paying me the minute I accepted the offer.  Even though I worked my 2 week notice period at the previous job.  I called them, explained, and mailed the errant checks back.  at least I can sleep at night.  I am net 2 grand poorer, but it's a small price to pay for my integrity.

I Took the family to MA this weekend for my daughters cheerleading competition.  Someone, probably a kid dropped 30.00 in the hallway at our hotel.  I went to the front desk and said if anyone ask for lost money have them call my room and tell me how much?  The girl at the desk said, How sweet.  I said, I don't someone's money.  I would be upset if I lost it.  No one claimed it so we all had a nice free breakfast with it.  Had someone come up to me while I was in my car leaving, I would of loved to given it back.  I tried.

Looks like he should have stopped waiting at about $460k.

This story reminds me of a boss I once had who decided he didn't have to pay my state accident insurance fund premium because the state mistakenly stopped billing him. Of course I got seriously injured on the job about three months later. What really pissed me off is that on the way to the ER he asked me to lie to the nurses about what happened and tell them I was off work at the time (this is after vomiting several times due to a skull fracture). Needless to say I told the truth and all he finally had to do was catch up on his payments to get out of trouble. I kind of wish they would have nailed him to the wall for what he did but I quit shortly after that ordeal anyway.

You know when this guy gets sentenced he will do more time than if he committed murder . If you steal money or embezzle from a company you get hammered by the law .

One time I received a check in the mail for several thousand dollars made out to me for cattle I just sold at auction(which I didn't).  I realized there was a guy in a neighboring town with the same exact name as me and so I called him up.  I knew this because he was about three grades ahead of me in school ironically.  Come to find out he raises cattle and had just sold some at auction.  He was glad to get his check.

That's awesome!! I have been very lucky with Good Samaritans my whole life!!  Just about anything I lose, somebody finds it - and returns it. One afternoon last summer I took my one-year old daughter to a downtown park for a kids music show. 

When I got to our car, I took Paige out of her stroller, buckled her into the seat, and walked around to the other side to get in.  OOPS!!  I HAD FORGOTTON  TO PUT THE STROLLER IN THE CAR!!

Needless to say, I DROVE AWAY WITHOUT our $300.00 stroller!

A couple of days later, wifey calls me (from the mall) to say "the stroller's not in the car - did you leave it in the garage?" 

I then immediately called the Police station. Luckily for me, someone had found the stroller, and returned it.  It was sitting in the lost and found waiting for me.

Someone could have easily sold it on eBay or Craigslist and made a fast hundred or more!!

Man, that felt good.  Thank God for nice people.

Morals?... A jackass like this will pull this kinda crap then go out and hire a Lier....ahum... I mean Lawyer and plead not guilty and clog up the courts and use up tax money so that the state or feds can prosecute him. Morals? not part of the guys conscience or vocabulary but he'll parade a bunch of family and friends to talk about what a nice guy he is.

now that was meant as a joke. There are a lot of jobs that are done at this gov't facility that are uncomfortable, sweaty, and little appreciation ever shown.
