Slider-type brake rotors? Update: Underway!

I'm putting a disc brake setup from a '74 Charger onto my '68, and am putting together some parts. I haven't hit NAPA or anything yet, as I prefer to get it all online. Everything I'm finding says that the rotors will only work the with pin-type calipers. Does anyone have an online source for rotors for the slide-type calipers? Nothing special, just cheap!

I used the slider type calipers in my swap.  I used the 11" rotors rather than the 12" rotors.

There are more details here:

Ahh, so you used '76 Dart rotors. Will those work with the '74 Charger knuckles and '68 hubs? I'm just kind of confused (remember I'm a novice.) Why do the rotors have studs in them? Does this mean I don't need the hubs that I have? Don't laugh!

dukeboy_318

dont quote me as this might be wrong, but on the three 74s ive had, all of them had one piece hub/rotor with the studs in them,  Also, try autozone or oriellys, that where i got mine, cost about 45-50 bucks each, they might have some cheaper, as i got the midgrade ones that are thicker

I went the same route as Shakey with the 76 Dart set up. I think if you use the spindles off the 74 Charger there will be alignment issues, cannot get the correct camber angles? Maybe someone else will chime in.  :popcrn:

DISC ROTORS doesn't use Hubs... the rotor works like the hub itself, with wheel studs on it and also bearings cups already attached

heres an article in the March 08 Mopar Muscle Magizine that says that the 74 spindels will work fine, just make sure you swap the entire brake system over.  its on page 92.

Right on, thank you very much.

I'm just going to use all of the '74 parts. . . pin type calipers, rotors, pads, and bearings. . . as you said, swap the entire system over pretty much. I'll post up about how it goes once I get my next paycheck and buy it all!

I'm talking specifically about the 74 one what is the year setup we are talking about :)

probably will have some ride heigth due the spindle height location diff but you can compensate with T bars

Yeah, I've read that they are a bit taller, we'll see how they affect the height of the car. Might be a little nice as I'll have the 318 t-bars with the 383 and all. . . probably not the best thing for my ball joints, etc. but oh well!  :icon_smile_big:

The reason many use the sliders is that you can get good pads for them.  You can't get good ones for the pin type.  There was a whole string of earlier posts about this.  This was brought out by a person on here in Las Vegas using handle Is it ever done.  You can use either type of caliper but need the correct caliper adapters---------pin type use one and sliders use the other.  And also, you can use either the small or the large rotors.  There again, you have to use the correct caliper adapter.  As far as the spindles go, if you go with the 73-76 A body spindles, they use the exact same geometry as the 2nd gen chargers use but use the larger bearing which allows you to use the later unicast rotor.  As I said, this rotor is available in either a small size at around 10.57 inches or the larger rotor at 11.7 inches.  These are available American made from Oreillys made by Wagner.  I don't recall the correct pad for the sliders but I think it's made by Bendix.  I have some at home but would have to dig them out of the pile.  The slider calipers are available pretty cheap rebuilt by Cardone.  You can also use the 74 B body spindle.  It's 3/4 inch taller than the original 69 was.  There is a ton of argument on whether this is OK or not.  I think pretty much all of the rebuild kits sold use this one but they don't say so.  Someone on here did a test that showed that it was actually better as far as handling is concerned.  Many have used it and I have never seen anyone report a problem on any of these forums.  Welcome to the confusing world of disc brake additions.

Well, goodbye paycheck, hello parts!

I decided to go the safe, less time consuming, less confusing, less expensive route and just get all the '74 Charger parts, as I said. Everything arrived today, so I'll start on my swap tonight after I get off of work. Man, those unicast rotors are HEAVY! Anyways, it all looks great and is all there, even the hardware kit I didn't need, as the calipers came with the bushings and whatnot anyways. One thing I was worried about was finding the "pins" (bolts) for the calipers, as the article said that they were hard to find, but they came with the calipers too so I guess they didn't look too hard.

More to come!

Well, I got the setup all mocked up and everything (pending a new lower ball joint boot, found that the current one is split!  :brickwall:)

I have but a couple of questions:

1) Where does the little metal piece in the picture below go? I assume it's some sort of anti-vibration clip or some shit like that that snaps around the outer pad/caliper but not sure. . .

2) What brake lines do I need to use? (remember, '74 setup on a '68). I automatically got the '74 Charger front hoses with the rest of the '74 Charger stuff, but the Mopar Action website lists "'70-'72 B-body" brake lines as necessary. . . I see that the '74 lines have one end non threaded, while the '72 Charger lines are threaded on both ends. . . not sure what works with what here/what I can use. . . help?

Thanks!

NMike

it is an anti rattle clip for the pads. it wraps around the pins and pushes down on the pads. or it is the clip that keeps the pins from sliding out.

kinda hard to tell in 2D. in person it takes a while for your brain to wrap around how it goes without seeing it installed previously.

definitelly it is!.

but dunno how eaxctly mounts. My car doesn't have and never have seen it mounted or dissasemblied on any 73/74 I have seen down here. My catalog doesn't show either.

My pads doesn't rattle thought!

Well, I treated the pads to some anti-rattle goop and basically everyone I've talked to doesn't have it on their car, so I'll just leave it off and see where I am when it comes down to driving it.

One last thing while I've got people involved. . .

Will a '74 Charger front hose work on the '68?

. . . and how does it mount to the caliper? The end going to the caliper isn't threaded. . . I guess there is some special bolt? Where do I get it?

Charger1973

I didnt put that clip on when I did mine either.

Nacho-RT74

is a 5/8 holed bolt... nothing normal, pretty much special. Hose end to caliper is similar to the rear axle hose with Y conector what links the frame tube with the axle tubes.

I think the threated end to the frame line should fit the same  :shruggy:

Yeah, as I expected. . .

Anyone know where I can pick up a couple? Would that be a parts store item? Looking on Rock Auto I'm not seeing it, neither NAPA online, etc.

EDIT:

Okay, so I see that it's called a banjo bolt. Nacho, are you sure it is 5/8" and not 3/8", as most of the ones I'm seeing are 3/8". Does it have to be a banjo bolt specific to my application or would any one of the appropriate size work?

Example:

Hey terrible one
I'm just wondering where you picked up your parts. I'm finally ready to do the conversion to discs and have been checking prices locally, autozone..napa. I'm getting prices a little under $300 bucks for rotors, calipers, pads and brake hoses  for a 74. did you find any decent deals in your search? just trying to save a little cash where i can.

Thanks
