Could someone please enlighten me as to what made a 500 in 71?  vin numbers, options, engine, etc.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Thanks for the welcome...didn't realize I'd never posted here.  I lurk here, and post on moparts and fabo fairly regularly.  But now, I've got a hankering for a 3rd Gen charger~ :D  The 3rd gen charger is actually the car that turned me on to mopars back about 1980, and I owned a 74 in high school.

Is the 500 a vin designation, or a fender tag option?

This may help. It's the 71 Charger dealer data book.

In the most basic terms:

VIN would start WP23... It is a seperate model with it's own VIN designation - no option code.

Base engine was the 318 - could get up to 383 4bbl.  They came with the upgraded R/T interiors and louverd tail light bezels.
