Crank Question...pretty basic

I always thought our cranks turn clockwise, if you're looking at the motor from the front.  Someone said they turn counter-clockwise, and that's why the driver's side tire always picks up off the ground first.  That makes good sense, but I was pretty sure they turned clockwise.  Who's right?  And if I am, then that begs the question, why does the driver's side tire lift up if the crank rotates the opposite way?  Thanks.

The crank turns clockwise looking from the front and the engine reacts by turning counter-clockwise and lifting the driver's side up.
