Well if you have ever wondered how things rust and or sieze up even in a dry place like a shop or garage here is a picture I captured earlier to show how it happens. The old JD is awaiting its new head in my garage. It was about 25 last evening and warmed thru the night. We have had rain on and off most of the day and its 62 outside right now. Was doing some stuff and happened to glance over and saw this. Luckily we had coated the block and cylinder walls with oil to protect. The engine block is still ice cold to the touch. All the humidity condensed onto the cold block area. Imagine what this does to stuff that sits for years. Outside or inside. Sorry for the big picture but sizing it down didnt really show the moisture as good.

Dang, good thing you caught it before it got worst.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

thats why i sprayed my entire block and componets with WD-40, helps keep that moisture from causing rust. and i wrap it in a trash bag

The brown discoloration was stained there before the moisture. We had wiped it down with PB blaster. I went ahead and dried everything and hosed things down good with PB again. Makes you wonder what happens inside your engine block when your car sits for a long time. Another reason they say to change the oil.  I bet its extremely bad on the old Dodge trucks with no PCV system and only an open draft tube.

I dig where you're coming from.
And I have a good example of the differences between living on the east coast (moisture hell), and the o-so-dry midwest.
I used to sandblast parts out behind my shop back east, and before I was even finished blasting, there would be a film of flash rust formed on the parts' surface. And yes, I had TWO moisture traps inline from my compressor.

Now I live out west.
My Charger was dipped and soda blasted in 2005, and put into my unheated garage.
Not a speck of rust has formed on the surface.

when i take the head off something, and it has to sit that way for awhile, i spray motorcycle chain lube on it. the best stuff i've found is called chain wax. works very very well.
