I recently acquired a 72' charger that has a 318 v8 motor.  I am restoring the car but i would like to keep the engine it came with.  However i'm not an expert on engines and i need some help on how to get some more horsepower out of this old engine.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A small four barrell carb and dual exhaust are pretty simple add on's to start with.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

also an  intake would be a simple add on

Shaner33, first welcome and post often and you will learn.

Couple of things you need to think about.

What do you thing you need in HP, 200, 225, 250, 275 you get the idea.

What do you want it for? Driver and MPG or just on weekends.

Rear gears and trans, 250 Hp would feel like a slug off the line with 2.79 gears.

Big question, budget! 318 can make 600 Hp but need real deep pockets. Budget and use is something you need to address before anyone can real help you on your quest. 250 Hp does not sound like a lot of power but it will wake up most people when you drop the hammer. Also don't belive what you read in print, Maw Mopar like to streach the truth, they wanted to sell cars.

Hope to see you posting again.

Ive gotta 318 in my daily driver with some work to it. It puts out some decent power, havent officially dynoed it but im saying its 350-380 at the crank. lil desktop dyno said 350, practically the same motor is in my buddies 78 dodge van, shift kit, 4.10s and he runs mid borderline low 14s in this 318 powered daily driver van, his is probably close to 400hp - different intake, machine work, etc....they can run..

my motor i hardly have any money in. I got the heads and intake for free and various things. i probably have less than $1000 in the actual motor (besides flashy valve covers, etc.) I'm expecting high 13s out of it once i get it dialed in, with some 3.91s and slicks too...

i have some specs on here too..

It's gonna be just a weekend car.  I'd like to get the horsepower up around 350, more or less.  I'm looking to spend around 2,000 to 2,500 if possible, i might be willing to go a bit more depending on how much hp i'm already getting.
