If the top pad is blank then it was a replacement right?

Not necessarily, but the rules about what you'd expect to see and what you do see are not hard-and-fast rules.  For example:

I have an August '68 Hemi block that has no stampings on the ID pad or VIN pad, and I have assumed that it was sold over the counter as a bare block.  I also have a January '69 440 block that has E440 HP2 and an assembly date of June 6th stamped on the ID pad, but there is no VIN stamped.  I've assumed that this was sold as a fully assembled replacement motor or was installed in a car but the VIN was not stamped - that did happen on occasion.  Beyond that, I have a June '73 440 block with no VIN or ID pad stampings, which I know was installed as a short block (crank/pistons/cam installed but no heads or intake) under the factory warranty.  Other warranty blocks I've seen had "WT" stamped on them, and several others have additional mysterious stampings.  Like I said, there is no hard and fast rule how engines were assembled and/or sold as "replacements".

In theory, an engine that was machined and fully assembled at the engine plant (e.g. Trenton) would have been stamped on the ID pad with the normal engine assembly information.  Depending on how far along the assembly process that particular engine went, it may not have been stamped at all.

Hows that for a non-answer to your question?   :P

Thanks for all the info. I have had the car since 78 and I have a work order from Jim Clark Chrysler Plymouth dated 1973 when they replaced the original with a short block. I guess it is the same engine I have now. For some reason the engine has 6-pack rods though. Did all the HP engines have 6 pack rods? Thanks again.
