How high can i take my 1974 318 2bbl with out it leaving the hood?  :nana:

aka, whats a safe redline? (its an auto for now, and has never shifted over 4200)

I would say about 5000 but dont keep it there too long. Or you can run it until it blows, then subtract 200rpms to find the redline.

5k is about it with a stock cam & unported heads....it won't pull after that anyway so there's no point in over revving it.  :Twocents:

If they are high mileage stock valvesprings, the valves will probably start to float by then anyway.

true...   but lets face reality here...     318s dont blow up...     i tried to blow two of them up...     i even tried to hurry the process up by dropping nuts, bolts, change, hog rings, screws, and small betteries down the carb at WOT and it didnt miss a beat...        I was kinda depressed    :RantExplode:

I was at a party many  years ago where they drained all of the oil out of a 318 and sold tickets guessing how long it would last.  Everyone was very surprised at how long that little sucker ran at WOT and no load.  In fact it didn't blow the first time, it overheated and seized up.  After cooling it was restarted and it blew parts the second time and didn't run all that long.  It was something like 20 or 30 minutes the first time and only a couple the second.

we ran the 318 through 57 minutes at WOT while dropping things down the carb...     it did not die...     only ran out of gas...    :shruggy:

Friend of mine ran around for two weeks without oil in his 318 trying to blow it so his parents would buy him a new motor.  Finally gave up and put oil back in, the motor still ran for about a year until he sold the car.
