heater hoses for a 68 charger

trying to start the motor.wondering if i dont have any heater hooked up do i need to have the heater hoses hooked up,cause i tried starting it and the water went into the inside of the car...do they serve any purpose other than heating the car?

They are used for heating the car only. Cap them off until you get a new heater core.
