Got my first insultingly low offer the other day.

My roommate had one of his friends over the other day, and this guy started to ask him if his "neighbor" (didn't know that the car was mine, apparently) would be willing to sell that old Barracuda sitting out front.  I told him it was mine, and that it wasn't for sale.  So he decides to make an offer.  How much does he offer, you ask?  He offered me $500 cash.  Yes.  A measly $500 dollars.  Now, my car may not be in the best of shape right now, but come on!  There are PARTS on that car worth $500.  Hell, I just spent $500 on an 8 3/4 suregrip for it, and expects me to sell him the entire car for $500?  I've had a few lowball offers before, but nothing quite this extreme.  I wanted to kick him out of my house.

I feel your pain. What's amazing is those people expect you to jump at their ridiculous offer like they are doing you a favor.

My 70 was sitting behind my work for a while. Back when it was complete minus engine and tranny. Everything elese is done. New bodywork, quarters, paint, carpet, headliner, etc...

This guy I see around every now and then caught me in some parking lot somewhere a few months ago, I was walking to my car and he was passing me in his, when I heard:

Him:You ready to sell that car yet?
Me:No man, not for sale.
Him:(Loudly) I'll give you two thousand dollars for it.....

2 grand wouldn't even pay for the restoration work I did to the body, much less the whole car.

People are just really stupid. Or clueless. Or inbread....

I buy and sell allot of things on forums and such and I always keep hearing the same thing; "I can find that on ebay or locally for cheaper than what you are selling it for...."

I usually then just tell them to go buy it there instead if it's cheaper!  :flame:

Make that "Come back with another $30,000", and I'd consider it.

my favorites are the ones who, after you tell them it isn't for sale  or that their offer is ridiculous, then tell you "Well...I can get one for less than that...no one is going to give you that much"....I would care, if I was trying selll it.

That's a good offer for your car, Ghost. You should have taken it...

Maybe I should have.  I could have paid what yours is worth, and had $300 left over! :icon_smile_big:

Well, it's not like these are REAL muscle cars anyway.  You almost never see a real 1965 Dodge Charger with the 427-tri-carb Hemi and the pistol-grip 5-speed.

This summer I have a guy come over and ask me at a gas station if I would sell it.  I said no and then he said that he had one just like mine back in the day.  He asks, "what year is it anyway?"  I told him it was a 73 and then he goes on to say, "Oh, mine was an 86."  What a goofball. :smilielol:

Hey Ghost, you'd be better off just messing with people instead of getting all upset. Have some fun at their expense.  :D

The wackiest offers (and people) sometimes come from when you are actually selling something. I once advertised a clean, rust free, 1975 Dart Sport, with a 4 speed that had all the original sheet metal & paint. Had it in the paper for $1800, some guy shows up, looks it over & tells me it's stick shift, & that he'd have to convert it to automatic & can only give me $900 for it.    ::)

I said "Stick shift? Oh shit, I didn't know that. Is that a bad thing to have in a car?"

He went on for like 15 minutes about that it was for his neice, & she can't drive stick, so it had to be converted & that all the parts would be expensive. I then told him I could do something with the price, but not cut in in half. He asked how much, so I said I'd be willing to go to $2500 on it.

The look on his face was pretty funny.  :D

I was leaving the "GoodGuys" show here in Spokane on Saterday when some guy walks up to the window and kept asking "HOW MUCH---HOW MUCH--HOW MUCH".  I finally just said ONE MILLION.  He said to wait there and he'd go get his check book.  Do you think I should have waited??? ::) ;D ::) ;D

Sounds like what just happened with my boss. He's been trying to sell the pub for decades and frankly, he's asking way too bloody much, about double. Today a guy came up to him and asked how much the bar is for sale and my boss replied $1 million! The guy then asked if he'd take $750,000 and my boss insisted on a full million (I damn near choked on an ice cube at this point). The guy then said he was from someplace down in the states (Michigan or Minnisota or some state like that) and he'd have the money by Wednesday.

Needless to say we are all waiting to see if this guy was for real or not although my bet is on not.

How much did you pay for the car? Also, you really can't blame the guy for asking what he offered. There are cars out there like yours and mine for that asking price. Thats how a lot of us get cars like we have today, by being at the right place at the right time. He simply asked a question it appears and got an answer. Its a don't know till you ask more less.My point being, you shouldn't feel insulted. Having roommates isn't whats its all cracked up to be now is it.
