K........i just bought a 383 out of a 68 new yorker to drop in place of my 318 in my 73 charger.     The 383 came with a 727 bolted to it, so i figured it would be an easy swap.   Well, the tranmission ends up hitting the firewall about the same time the oil pan hit the k member.   If the pan was 1/2 inch shorter (front to back wise) everything would be fine.   Anyone had a similar problem??   Also will stock mounts for a 440 in a 73-74 b body get it done?   I think that they are the same block, but thought you guys would have the skinny on the deal for sure.
--one more deal   --where are the casting numbers for the production on a 383.   The numbers on the side confirm it's a 383, but i can't locate the numbers to tell me what it came out of originally and what hp was factory.

-it's got 452 heads and a two barrel intake on it now, i got a set of 906's and a four barrel intake with it.   --it that the main difference besides cam between magnum and non magnum?

C-body oil pan can be different  did you change that?  I think the engine mount may be as well. This I am not sure of, the pan I am.

You'll have to split them.   You could try taking the oil pan off if you want no part of splitting them but watch the pickup tube.   I'd put the pan back on as soon as it's clear.  Blown 70 is probably right about the pan although I do recall once getting a 440 from a New Yorker and dropping it into a 2nd gen Charger with no issues on the oil pan.  Where is the sump, what is the part number?
If the stock mounts are sandwich type, then you're okay.   If it was early 68, casting numbers may be the only thing on there.   There should be a casting date.   What does it say?
Don't be afraid to keep the 452 heads on there.

um....what are sandwich mounts??? I don't know squat about mopars right now.........i'm a converted chevy guy.  The original mounts off of the 318 have a single long bolt going though two slots about three inches apart from one another on the frame. (the bolt in the mount is surrounded by rubber.)  Then it goes up and bolt to two diffent places on the block.

I believe the C-body pan will work on a 2nd generation but he is dealing with a 3rd gen.   I think that may be different.  I think the mounts may work not sure I would have to see them  I am not that good.

I know more about 2nd gen. than thirds so someone here will have a better answer for you.

besides the valve springs and cam, should be no difference between magnum and non magnum ,thats what ive always been told

he needs a 971 pan for a 3rd gen and he needs the schumacher swap mounts so the 383 will fit on the 318 k member.

k....i looked one that schumacher swap site, but they don't have anything for a 73 b-body.  Were is the best place to get one of those 971 pans?  Could i just cut the pan back a little and reweld it??  When a BB is installed in a 73 b-body, what type of clearance is there between the bottom of the pan and the k member??  I'm a welder/fabricator and if i knew approximatly the installed height, i could just make up some new brackets (like those in the schmacher kits).

Make your own then.. I have done that before not for street cars but I see not issue with it.  That motor mount does not look correct as far as I can tell.  Put the motor where you want it and Make a mount.  Just my opinion if you can, and have the skill.  I would just get an aftermarket pan myself but you may be albe to cut it.  IF YOU WANT I will see what pan is on the '73 440 I have in the shed,  I have no use for the pan anymore and it as in a 2nd gen Charger.

you can cut the pan back or just buy an aftermarket, but remember you have to adjust for oil pickup length.

Yea, I thought the 318 K-member was different than the K-member for the 383.
