Timing question 400

When setting the timing today I started with 10 degrees at idle but when I checked total at 3500-4000rpm it read 50 degrees and I was told it should be no more than 32-36.  Suggestions???

Did you check it with the vacuum hose disconnected from the distributor?   If not, check it again with it disconnected.
