i know the Carter 4966 is the # for a 1971 440 but is it an HP carb # and what is the CFM listed for it?

histoy

My 1972 Chilton's manual shows that the 4966S has a primary throttle bore of 1 7/16".   The 4968S listed for a 1971 engine has a primary throttle bore of 1 11/16", so that may be the HP carb.   The manual doesn't show the cfm rating for either one.  Hope this helps...Brian

If it is a AVS it is probably close to a 600-625 cfm rating. If it is a Thermoquad they had a 750 and 850 cfm rating.          Grumpy

4966 C-4-AVS 71/O 440 A-120 A/T

A120 is the standard performance 440, A134 is the HP.

Carter never published the cfm ratings for OEM carbs so it's anybody's guess.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

But they were all 600-625, correct?

I always get flak when I say this but the literature handed out in the old Performance Clinics stated some pretty low cfm numbers for the AVS, my memory says 585 for the small version and 635 for the large. Of course, that literature is long gone.

thanks everyone for the infomation. i wasn't sure if there were any links to the cfm ratings or not. i know over the years i have read alot of strange things about the cfm of the carter carbs but none of it was truely verified, so it was only a guess in my eyes.
