Painted Bumpers !?

Hello All.  My wife and I just bought a 1973 Charger.  The guy before us put a 72 front end to have the hide away headlights.  Well he then  started some body work on the front right finder and 1/2 of the hood.  He also primed the front bumper!  Now my questions is what are my options besides finding a new bumper.  Can this be saved?

Most shops that re-chrome will strip the bumper, they will even straighten & take care of dings & dents. Sometimes a painted bumper looks nice. :shruggy:

Is it straight? Maybe he's one of those hacks who doesn't bother prepping his stuff before painting it so who knows. maybe there's some good chrome under the primer (but I doubt it). Other than that you'll have to rechrome the one you have or buy a new one, and from what I've seen the new repros cost a lot less than rechroming the original.

I blasted and painted the bumpers on my 73, I really like the look of it,  If yours is really in bad shape, I think I have another front bumper from a 74, it will need to be rechromed if you want show condition, so if you want chrome and yours is not that bad, have it rechromed.

what's the problem ? primer and paint can be easily removed from a chromed bumper with any solvent or even waxing/polishing

Natcho. if the guy who painted the bumper did it right, he either sand blasted or took a DA to it prior to painting, if not the primmer will come off fairly easily.  I would bet there is some rust and possibly even filler under the primmer.  I have seen cars with bad bumpers body parts etc. get a fast filling and shot with some primmer :rotz:

A friend of mine painted his bumpers black.
They look ok I guess but I just had to go with chrome on mine 73.
