I've been told I want a brown tint to the plugs..I have grey as far as I can tell.  Also, the coloration isn't the same on all plugs.  Here's some from #1, #7, and #8.

#1 and #7

#8 one from each side:

I thought I should see brown but don't.  Does anyone have a pic of what a plug SHOULD look like on a well tuned carb?
Also, the flash I think made the plugs look lighter than they really are.

Thanks,
- Doug

Hard to tell from the pics but they look a little on the lean side to me. I would jet up until you get a light brown/tan color on them. This might help your detonation issues assuming that they are the correct heat range for the application.  ;)

What's the PN on those accel plugs Doug ?

I agree. those look on the lean side to me. try jetting up.

Well after jetting up I'm still not seeing anything but light grey, and white.  I'm two sizes over on the primaries and 6 sizes over on the secondaries.  I'm going to keep jetting up until I see brown, but I'm losing confidence in this carb.

Ron, the number on the Accel plugs is 134.

Are the pics. taken just after a full on blast or after idling back into your garage??

After idling back.  In fact that's after a few weeks of driving.  I don't really have any place to do a hard run then shutdown.

Looks like mine did running race gas, are you running race gas? you'll get a grayish color, they look fine IMO, you have a nice gray ring on the base of the threads, the heat range also looks very close

I would love to have color like that on my plugs, FWIW, just jet for best MPH, don't worry about the color too much if your idling it around (like i do :slap:) you really need to check that on a full run & shut down.

Looks to me that you are on the lean side, and also a very large glug gap. I would do:
1. Check the timing, and correct it.
2. New plugs, and make sure i have the right heatrange and gap.
3. Leave the carb as it is now, and drive for an hour or 2.
4. Check plug gap, to make sure they has not changed ( got bigger), and just clean them very gently.
5. Run the engin up to working temp, and start from 0, and stay on the hammer, till at least 70mph, if possible in an upgrade! IMPORTANT!!! Turn the engine off, and roll off to the curb, and check the plugs. This is the only way to see how they are on WOT condition.

Could be that timing is off, so it is "spiking" on WOT on low rpm`s. That could be the reason for your strange readings.
Since you are getting so small differences with jetting, i have a feeling it is something else.
Good luck

Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I've been running 110 octane lately because of detonation even at 32 degrees total at WOT.  I'll probably go back down to 92 octane before I replace the plugs so I can get a normal reading.

Purple440, that IS a normal reading for the 110 your running, if you go back to 92, they will go brown in color, the color too me looks fine, it doesn't look lean at all, your getting plenty of color on the thread ends & down in the porcelin ;)

You were right on jg68 - I went through less than a tank of pure 92 octane and the plugs cleaned up and I started seeing the light brown coloration starting.  I had the carb jetted way up because of all that greyness so I jetted back to stock at the same time I switched octane and I have a more zip now.
