What do you think of this cam?

Its a Crower. ad. duaration 271/284 duration at .50 222/324 lift .486"/.495

This would be going into my 383, .030 oer, headers, eddy performer intake, eddy 750 mechanical sec., MP electronic ignition. 3.23 open rear end (Will be getting a sure grip, may go with 3.55's. Will it make much of a difference?), not sure on the conertor or stall. I got a 292 .510 cam in it right now, I would like something that is less tempormental, and is a better fit for a 383. Will this get it better low/mid range power? What do you think? A guy at a local shop suggested it for my set up.

The HDP 271 is an excellent cam....i ran the next size up (HDP 282) in my 440 and liked it.  :2thumbs:

For your combo that cam would be an excellent choice, inmo.  :icon_smile_cool: Your carb tuning problems will be over and it will make a significant increase in bottom end power over the current cam which is mismatched for the rest of the build.  :Twocents:

One more thing Ron. Do you think my gas mileage will improve with a cam better suited to my setup? Thanks again.

cam design & good tuning can definatly help milage as long as your right foot doesn`t get too heavy

firefighter3931

:iagree: a light foot goes along way to helping milage.

From a comparison standpoint, the Crower 271 will be in its powerband much sooner than the Comp 292 so the tq will be where you need it to be for cruising rpm's. At 2500 rpm the Crower will be right in it's sweet spot....which is where most street cars spend most of their time. That Comp profile isn't making much power below 4000 in a 383, inmo.

So its going to help with midrange power, do you see my low end power improving a noticeable amount? Right now its not much when it starts out (will lay about 5-10 feet of rubber, with an open rear end) but by the time the rpm gets up there (like you said about 4000) it really seems to take off, It'll bark the tires pretty good on the 1-2 shift (haven't got to try a 2-3 at full throttle).

The bottom end power will be much improved......lots of tire fryin torque !  :2thumbs:

i used that cam in my daughters 440 and its nice but if i was to do it over again i wouldnt buy it, id go with a custom ground comp from porter racing heads.   my reasoning is,  i bought cam, lifters and springs from crower (they were the cheapest)  i spent a fair bit more money than if i woulda just went with a custom cam lifters and springs.
