looking for suggestions on hauling my Charger on a open trailer.........

O.k. car was painted about 3 weeks ago and now i have to transport it 1200 km on a open U-Haul trailer,any suggestions on how to protect the paint?
should i use a car cover or will it do more damage flapping in the wind?

Don't cover it - your paint will be ruined when you get there.  If you have to haul it on an open trailer, make sure the truck doing the towing has good mud flaps, stop to check your straps and chains every hour or so and slow down lots in construction.  I'm afraid to say that the roads in Quebec are atrocious so you may want to heed the 55 MPH max speed warning U-Haul gives.  My Charger towed real well on the U-Haul tandem when I bought it.

 I towed my 70 Charger from San Diego to Kansas City (3,000 miles) about 22 years ago.  My only problem was that it was covered in oil that my truck was leaking.  It cleaned up though and did not hurt the paint.

I agree that you should not cover it as it will chafe your paint really bad by the time you get there.  You can always clean off any dirt, oil, or grease once you get there by washing the car or hosing off.  The only option you can do is to try and make some type of a deflector shield for in front of the car that will cause the wind to go around the car for the most part.

I have seen new cars covered with a protective tape on the hood and fenders.  It will definitely reduce the chance of damage to the front of you Charger.

Ive heard they make a spray on type mask for the front of your car now too thats supposed to wash right off.  Never heard much about it though.  Whatever you do dont put a cover on it.

Problem is if he just had the car painted, the paint will probably still be curing unless it is 3 months or older paint.  That is why body shops say not to wax a freshly painted part or car for at least 3 months since the paint dries from the outside in.  The spray on mask will likely seal in the paint like what a wax will.

I would put a car cover on it and get a few rolls of shrink wrap and wrap it up so it won't flap. Then put big tarp down and drive the car on it and wrap it some more. I towed mine in winter 250 miles and it was bone dry and uninjured. If you do choose my method make sure the exhaust doesn't come in contact with the tarp while you drive it on. Took me an hour to wrap it up but it was the best thing next to a enclosed trailer.

NO Cover and get good mudflaps for your truck or the full width sweep-type you see on tow rigs for campers.

I'm towing from fresh paint  this monday. its going on a flat bed I'm only going 30 miles No Cover  :scratchchin:   Good Luck Dude

DO NOT cover it. for those that have towed with one covered and no damage, You got very lucky. Regardless of how tight you get the cover , it will flap in the breeze.

Me personally, I'd find someone or a trailer company and borrow or rent an enclosed. Lots of trailer dealers rent trailers , both opens and enclosed

I did this to bring my car TO the shop about 600 miles away.



It's the stuff that they use to wrap boats in for transport.
I did it more to keep crap from flying off the car and hitting someone.

I spent hours taping and heating that stuff to shrink it - but it worked out well.

Coming home, I just brought the car home uncovered. It was only in primer though.

:iagree: 100% with Bill....no way in hell i'd move a car that nice with an open trailer.....especially with fresh paint.  ;)


Buy or rent an enclosed trailer....don't take any chances. You waited almost 2 years to get it where it's at now and you'd be kicking yourself in the ASS if the paint gets mucked up !  :Twocents:

if you do decide to go with an open trailer covered or not just make a point of putting all your strap tighteners, boomers etc somewhere you can see them from your mirrors preferably drivers side as it makes it a little easier to keep an eye on things and reduces turkeyneck syndrome

Back N Black

Loaded the car on a U-Haul Trailer Sunday afternoon and left 6 a.m. Monday morning arrived at my destination 13.5 hours later without incident. Only stop for gas ,pee and Red Bull. Got lots of thumbs up on the way and a couple of guys at a gas station ask if it was the car from Bull Run, so Mike your also famous up here in Canada.
