Greens hate new Challenger (hard to imagine)

First off, I didn't see it so I do not present any of this as fact but a friend of mine called tonight to talk about a debate he had just seen on a Canadian tv channel.
Apparently they had a group of envirnmentalists debating with someone who I am guessing was opposing them.   Somewhere the topic of cars came up and they were extremely critical of musclecars and took great delight in slamming the new Challenger and hoping that it would not make it to production.  They also characterized the old musclecars as rusted out gas guzzlers.
Nothing too original there but I have to wonder how many of them expect to get around the 2nd largest country in the world once they leave the safe and comfy public transit and bicycle safe environs of Toronto?  It isn't exactly densely populated here either.
I think somebody's parents should have taken them for more Charger rides when they were kids.

Im sorry but todays trucks/suv's/18 wheelers aren't very environment friendly. They should check into that, there's much more of them running around than muscle cars.

I can see this one getting locked, but the whole environmental crisis/global warming thing was manufactured as a scare tactic to begin with. They need to mind their own damn business about what I drive. They can kiss my Hemi Ram's tailgate!

Greenies just can't stand masculinity in general.

Musclecars, trucks/SUVs, guns, fossil fuels, machinery, architectural construction . . . the common thread is that these things all appeal to the masculine & power-seeking parts of the brain.

Some of the tree huggers are so fanatical that they oppose anyone who doesn't live in caves or up in the trees. It makes it difficult on the more rational and sane members to get a point across, but the off-the-wall ones are the ones who get on the news. Same as anything I guess.

Hemidoug

That's fine, I hate the lowlife, scumsucking environmentalists.  :D

Conciously or not, I was clearly trying to stir the pot a little but I think I was less interested in opening a discussion on environmentalists than I was on one about them getting the new Challenger killed.  Will the market dictate or political interference?

dodgecharger-fan

Of course as soon as you toss out the argument that the "green" cars cost more in terms of energy and environmental impact than a Hummer, they clamp their hands over their ears and starting chanting....

It only took mainstream news about a year to get that report out, but it was finally aired last month - at least up here in Canada, it was...

Everyone on this planet can make a conscious effort to affect their own impact on the envoronment. I'll say again - reducing pollution and saving energy are damn good ideas in their own right. Give us the technology to do it and a market in which to purchase such technology without having it crammed down our throats and we'll end up with better technology and more people just might adopt some of it.

Going totally green is just not an option for EVERYONE, but you don't know if that SUV driving SOB has got solar panels on the roof of his house and wind turbines in his yard to try and offset the impact of driving the SUV - because he has three boys playing hockey and this is the best vehicle for hauling them and all their gear to 6 practices and 3 games a week...

What? Are you going to try and tell a Canadian that his kids can't play hockey now because it's too much of an environmental impact?

Good luck!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

And try that in Minnesota and you'll left out in a forest with peanut butter covered steaks strapped to your body and female wolf scent all over your body.

My point is there's two extremes to this argument and somewhere in between, there is reality.
I think the SUV driving SOB that try to save energy at home, and not litter, and cleans up on his own patch of planet as much as possible, and hopes for better, more viable technology to help in the whole process is right smack dab in the middle of that reality.

and the planet is going to warm and cool regardless of that reality - or the efforrts of the two extremese for that matter...

and I agree with hemidoug      :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_cool: :coolgleamA:

I do not know if this thread is going to get locked by the content matter, but.....

This is the first intelligent thing I have seen from Silver in, well....., hell I cannot remember when... Based on that, this thread should be locked to preserve this once in a lifetime feat :D

He brings up a point that leads right in to my reasons for starting this though.  Will political pressure be more likely to kill the Challenger than other reasons?
If it were, how many people would be opposed to Challengers with smaller base engines?  Hybrid Challengers?
Let's face it, Dodge is trying to market the car right now as a halo car for a somewhat more mainstream market than the Viper.  People attacking the Challenger for it's planet raping capabilities are not going to buy a Challenger, Viper, SUV or even a 68 Charger with a 318, they use it as an example and lump it in with an image that they percieve as true (rusty old musclecars) but how much do they really influence what is happening now?
Remember that pressure from do-gooders convinced Dodge to change the name of the Demon.
It's a complex world for modern carmakers and these are some of the things that contribute to the cost of vehicles today.  Safety regs, CAFE standards, emission controls, market research, crash testing and legal teams trying to prepare for every possible lawsuit imaginable.
We're lucky to have cars like our Chargers because I can't imagine Dodge ever trying to have a lineup like they did in 1970 again.

Charger74

Well, if they kill the Challenger, then they might as well kill the corvette, mustangs, camaro, lambo's, ferraris, etc, etc.  I don't think it will get killed by some enviro whacko.  If it gets killed, you might as well kiss Chrylser good bye,  to many people want this car to come out.

69Chrgr

And remember, enviromentalists are staunch Democrats. Can't see how people that like old cars can vote for the likes of Hillary and Al Gore, because they wish to take your hobby from you.

hutch

I hate this envron crap being pushed down our mouths.  Its like its the new religion or something.  Live by it or you are the problem.
In the words of Colonel Sanders,,,   "I'm too drunk,,, to taste this chicken"

Ghoste

Well trying to stay somewhat topical to the car, I should add that this came (as I understand) out of Toronto so it's basically in the Challenger plant's backyard.  That may be why they chose to pick on it but I really don't know.

red72chrgr

Well since the car is being built in Canada and the opposition is from same, it stands to reason it's political. As for the others being enviromentally unfriendly, yes they most likely are but won't be put out of production until there is a money making replacement. As for 18 wheelers, I'll keep my mouth shut.
Nothing personal, just business

No way in hell would DCX actually kill the Challenger over these wackos.

Chrysler could kill the Challenger & lose a hundred million dollars over it.  Wouldn't change a thing.
The greenies would still hate & protest Mopar just as much as they did before.

41husk

Projects have gotten the axe over a lot less, but I think with the sale of Chrysler, the new owners will have some forsight to build this thing to compete with the mustang rather than another Viper buyer target market.

The Demon name was changed because of some church groups.  Admittedly, that's much easier to do than scrap a car on the first morning of production.

Shakey

I'd love to meet one of these hardcore environmentalists so I could ask a few questions about where they live, what they eat, how they get around and how they earn the money to do all of the above.   :yesnod:

I'd fuckin' love it!   :D

Mike DC

If Detroit was ever gonna let the Green Lobby talk them out of producing ANYTHING, then they probably wouldn't have spent the last 15 years surviving entirely on SUV/truck sales.

Greenies protesting the new Challenger?  It fails to worry me.

Brock Samson

maybe i'll invite Julia Butterfly on to the board to debate you...  :D

Ghoste

Julia Butterfly?  She hates Chargers too?  I thought she was a chef or an actress with big teeth or something.

anyone who lives two years inna tree has got to be against the chally right?..  :icon_smile_wink:
i find these threads pretty silly...  :yesnod:

Ghoste

Not as silly as wasting two years of your life sitting in a tree.
