Whelp, another ebay scam,  the buyer of John Schneider's general lee that sold for close to ten million has disappeared without paying for the car.  Anyone else see that coming?

:haha:
He should get his arse kicked...for 1) buying that car for 10 mill and 2) faking him out.
Earth. Even the word sounded strange to me now... unfamiliar. How long had I been gone? How long had I been back? Did it matter? I tried to find the rhythm of the world where I used to live. I followed the current. I was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong -Solaris

I wasn't laughing at the fact that the guy backed out on the auction.  I was laughing at the comment about boss hogg having something to do with it.

I would assume that John is going through all the bids to find someone who was really serious.

Blakcharger440

Maybe the buyer got wind of all the talk surrounding the car, then spoke to Cooter and figured he was in for a heap of trouble.
Stay tuned folks as its gonna get rough in Hazzard.

You don't want John to be angry... You really don't want him to make him angry

TeeWJay426

Not a big surprise.... guy probably started to think about the true 'investment' value of a car worth about 1% of what he bid on it..... after all, in 25 years or so, when the standard comment in a discussion involving this car is "Dukes of what?????", and the majority of us Charger afficiondos are either 1) no longer above ground, or 2) more concerned with the sealing ability of our Depends than the value of '69 Chargers, what will this car be worth THEN? Probably STILL not even close to 10 million.......

Now what of the alleged fact that Schneider says the guy only beat the second bid by 100 bucks?  Is he taking the 100 dollar loss and offering to the next highest bidder or holding out for the full juice?

Oh i'm pretty sure he would take 100 less.  Hell i'd even take 1 million less...

You guys think the second highest bidder was more serious?  :scratchchin:

Actually my veiled sarcasm was more about the fact that John seems to be going after the deadbeat buyer (which he should) instead of offer number 2 (if it's real)(and he may very well be doing that).

Troy

Actually, since the second place bidder didn't "win" then he can't legally go after him. If it were two fools playing a game then the winner gets to take the heat. The sad part is that someone out there was probably serious about the car but tracking them down is much harder due to the irresponsibility of others. Some people just haven't figured out when to be serious and when to be a clown. Some of them even visit this site... ;)

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ghoste

I didn't really mean "go after" number 2 in that sense.  I meant calling him and giving him the old, "hey guess what!".
I'd really like to know how this entire soap opera plays out.  The true version.

Obi-Wan

John is taking legal action towards the "buyer".

according to various sources, the $ isnt the issue, the issue is "high bidder" is binded to a contract as soon as that bid has been placed, so the legal action may get some $,  will probably get publicity....being John made a movie, and is making a sequal to it, so any publicity should work in his favor.

we'll see what happens

and btw....

He is NOT making a second chance offer to "high bidder 2" ::)

not taking any sides, just stating the facts

Oh, my point was twofold: the second bidder could have been a putz as well but if they were a real bidder they'd have a great argument for turning the offer down (they were bidding against a prankster after all). I seriously doubt that anyone would go ahead and pay that kind of money if they knew the bidding was rigged. Also, giving them a second chance offer would/could muddy the waters a bit for any legal action against the high bidder. I think it would be difficult to force the high bidder to make good on the deal if you've sold the car to another guy - especially for a much lower price. I think John is trying to set an example like "Hey, you bought my car and here it sits in my driveway waiting for you to pick it up. I'm a honest guy and won't sell it out from under you." He's upholding his end of the bargain and putting the other guy through the ringer. Good job!

I wonder how eBay verified this guy? Do you think they have emails or taped phone conversations where he convinced them that he was legit? I wonder how many times they asked? It will be interesting if this thing ever goes to court.

In a way it's very sad as this whole ordeal is yet another tribute to the demise of personal responsibility...  :eyes:

Which is why I have a negative outlook on the whole transaction.  Not against John but against someone putting up a ridiculous bid (or two someones or even three or...) and then the whole, well, just all of it.  The cult of personality, demise of responsibility, e bay greed...  I don't know, there were just a bunch of things about this "sale" that left me cold.
Oh well, the sun still came up this morning and everything else that matters is great! ;D
