what size rear did most 72 chargers come with stock 318 and a 904 trans?

Ghoste

I believe the standard one was an 8.25 but I'm not sure if that is how most of them were ordered or not.

not sure either but thanks its a start I love this sight!! its been a long time and i just picked up a 72 hard top i rebuilt the 318 and wanted to put a better rearend in it. i dont think the car would be worth  going all stock the body is great but its a bench colum sift and the color wasnt what i wanted but is what i could afford so the plan is to have fun now then replace motor and trans with a 440 and a 727 chang color to sublime and color the interior black ill post some pics soon. thanks again

Welcome to the greatest place on the web!

Do you have the car.  If so, this will help ID the rear end. :icon_smile_big:

you'll be wanting an 8 - 3/4 or a Dana for that combo you are planning to go with.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Earth. Even the word sounded strange to me now... unfamiliar. How long had I been gone? How long had I been back? Did it matter? I tried to find the rhythm of the world where I used to live. I followed the current. I was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong -Solaris

We don't say posi around here :nono:,  Mopar is called Sure Grip. :icon_smile_big:

Yes you can switch out the rear end center section(also known as a chunk or pig) to install either a 741,742,489 case with a sure grip(cone or clutch) in there and the desired gear ratio.

here is some more good reading for you that will explain it much better than I.

The clutch style sure grip is the more desired over the cone style due to the availability of the rebuild parts.  Only way to rebuild a cone style thus far is shaving the cone 30 thousandths.

Also you will notice that people tend to steer away from the 741 rear housing and go for the 742 or the much sought after 489.  I actually have all 3.  Right now my General is sporting the 741 Cone style Sure grip with a set of 3.23's.  It originally came with a one legger(open rear) 2.76's and a 489 case.  I'm keeping it because it's original.  I will be changing it once again this summer to a clutch style sure grip 3.91 with a 742 case.
Hope the articles help you.

As far as the paint code.....

See if you can locate it from this site.  just look to the right and you will see the paint codes and years.  download the pics and select the chart for a 1972.  Let us know what you got? :icon_smile_big:

Also, if you have a fender tag that might be able to help us out as well.
