A stupid question for the soldiers on here that have been touring in the desert.

What kind of socks do you guys wear when over there in the sand? I was reading and the Altama desert combat boots say to wear thick wool socks. Why would you want to wear wool socks in the desert heat? Feet get that cold at night or is the wool used to wick your feet sweat away and into the boot to dry out?!?! Or do you even wear wool socks at all?

Not a soldier, but I was a boy scout  ;D

But seriously we always used a thin cotton sock, then a thick wool sock. The cotton pulls the sweat away from your feet, and the wool helps dissipate it. And makes for a nice walk because of the padding. Never did a lot of desert hiking but I did do a 50 miler every year for like 5 years.... I miss being able to do that.

I just wore the standard issue boot socks.  I did have some really thick pairs, and never noticed much of a difference as far as one being hotter than the other.  I guess that when you are wearing a flack jacket and kevlar in 120 degree heat, you dont think about your feet too much.

I wore the new green army issue socks.  Best socks they have had since the old green wool socks.  They don't shrink to a size 3 either.  Change them every day, powder in your boots and you will be golden.  David
