Magnum Matt

I'm new here, names Matt and I just got my first Charger.  1972 Magnum 400.  Starting to restore it, and I need to know some good sites to order parts from and maybe get a catalog.  Still can't believe that I got it for free.  Body is in great shape.  Got alot of pictures of it on my myspace page.  Will transfer them over as soon as I figure out how.  www.myspace.com/truthiness101

Get a YEAR ONE Catalog. There in Atlanta Georgia area. Get a Sherman & Associates Catalog if you need Sheetmetal. There in Detroit area. Year one sells most sherman parts though. LEON.

Magnum Matt

I looked at Year One last night, and saw 2 Mopar Catalogs.  Sadly I have no idea which catalog I need.  One is for A/C bodies and the other was B/E bodies.  Now I know I seem stupid for this but I have no idea what mine is.  Any help?

TruckDriver

 :o A Rallye 4spd too yet!!! Looks like a good start. You got a somewhat rare car there. Oh, and it's a '74, not a '72 ;)

You want the B body catalog. Also, try the paddock for parts.

Ebay is a good sorce too, but can be pricy.

You would need the B body. Why not go through the online listing before buying a catalog.

Magnum Matt

Not a 74, it's a 72.  That is when it was bought.  So a 74 wouldnt have been out yet.

Mines a '72. Who ever told you it is a '72 is wrong, trust me. The roof lines are totally different. You serial numbers will tell you that too. The 6th number should be a 4 (i.e. 1974)

I just went and looked at the VIN the 6th number is a 3.  There isn't a 4 in the VIN.  Dad got the title today so I will look at it tomorrow and find out for sure.  But like I said I am 99.9% its a 72'.  Is yours a SE?  I know they look different.

hemihead

Not a 72 but possibly a 73. The 72 roofline at the quarter window is different. Nice ride and an excellent price too!  :o  I personally find Year One to be expensive myself. Don't let some of the guys bother you here. Most are helpful, nice guys just some think they are experts but can't even fix their own car. Good Luck !

I didn't see no grills in the back of the hood, that's why I said '74. Must be a '73 then. Yes mines a S.E.

Hell it don't bother me...  I am just glad to actually find a place that is for the classics.  I was on Chargerforums.com and it is all for the new "Charger"  If you can call them that.  Personally I don't think American Muscle should be a 4 door sedan...  But thats just my opinion.  They all acted like the classic was a scar on the face of Dodge.  And pretty much gave me the cold shoulder so I said screw it.

Magnum Matt

Yeah that wet spot is where dad put oil on it to get the doors open.  We are gonna steam clean it this weekend.  Have a feeling that the paint aint gonna hold up too well when we are done.  But thats ok, I am going black on the paint.  Thinking about starting at the hood with a light black and going into a dark black.  I have always loved Metallica, so I kinda wanna do a little tribute to them with the paint.  And Fade To Black just seems like it will look pretty good.

The front and back "push bumpers" dont match.  The front have the chrome trim, the back ones dont.  So something has been changed from original.  The 3 in the VIN would make it a 73, if its the 6th digit.  How did you end up getting that for free?  A pistol grip rallye is a pretty desirable car, and a big block too...   :icon_smile_tongue:

Magnum Matt

My dad is really good friends with the guy that bought it back in the 73'.  When he bought it it was $4,300.  Well he paid it down until there were only 3 notes left on it and he missed a payment.  So the bank seized the title, but let him keep the car.  So another one of my dads friends bought the title from the bank and just never got the car.  So it has been sitting up since 1984 in the original owners back yard.  He had bought a full rebuild kit for it and was planning on restoring it back in the 80's.  But there was some confusion as to who had full owner ship for it.  He diddn't want to fix this car up and then have the guy that bought the title come get the car that he just put all this money into.  So he let it sit.  So last week my dad talked to him and asked him what he was planning on doing with it.  He handed him a piece of paper that had the title owners name on it and said talk to him...  So dad called him up and go figure that the guy doesn't even remember buying the title.  So he told dad if I havn't needed it for the past 25 years then I don't guess I'll need ever.  So he told us to go ahead and get it.  So James the original owner gave us the keys and said it's yours then.  The only problem is that we can't find the title.  We have the bill of sale but there is no record of the car in the DMV...  So we are in the process of getting all that straightend out.  I think the guy still wants the car, but he has just gotten old and he can't get around very well anymore.  I think he just got tired of people asking him about it and trying to steal it from his yard.  Yes that has happened on more than one occasion, which is why we only have 3 of the original wheels.  I mainly think he just wants to see  it back on the road, and he knows that me and dad are gonna get it there.  So that is how I got it for free.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to obtain a mechanics title or anything then please let us know.

Charger1973

Thats a nice score.   :yesnod:   First thing I would do is crawl under there and check out the frame rails.  Be sure to join the 3rd gen registry board too.  dodge-chargeronline.com
If you have a fender tag, you should get that decoded so you know what options the car had when it left the factory.

I would look into getting a bonded title, if none of the previous owners want the car then it wont be a problem.  You fill out the proper DOT form, and they send a letter to the last known title holder, and if they dont respond in something like 10 days to claim ownership, they issue you a bonded title (you have to buy the bond first though).  After 3 years there is no need for a bond anymore and they issue a regular title.  At least thats how it works here in Iowa.  I know because im in the process of doing that with one of my 73s now.

Nice car, for a nice price.
Earth. Even the word sounded strange to me now... unfamiliar. How long had I been gone? How long had I been back? Did it matter? I tried to find the rhythm of the world where I used to live. I followed the current. I was silent, attentive, I made a conscious effort to smile, nod, stand, and perform the millions of gestures that constitute life on earth. I studied these gestures until they became reflexes again. But I was haunted by the idea that I remembered her wrong -Solaris

Yep, you'll do just fine here. :icon_smile_approve:

Congrats on your score, that's pretty neat!

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Do you even need a title in your state for a car over 20 years old? Some states don't even require a title if a car is that old. IF the state doesn't give you one, there is a web site that will legally get you one for your car and state. http://www.its-titles.com/

Also, can you get a good clear picture of your fender tag? I will run it through the tag decoder for you. It will tell you what your car came with when new. Plus, I'm curious :D

What fender is the tag under?  I am guessing one of the back ones...  I will crawl under it tomorrow and take a picture of it.  I want to see what all my baby had from the factory!  Oh and when I got home today there were 2 cop cars in front of my car.  I thought "Great....  The car has been setting up for 25 years and NOW they realize it's stolen.  Just my luck..."  So I looked at dad and he said that the cops were inspecting it to fill out information for the title.  So I asked him what time they got there, and he said about lunch.  Well this is at about 6:30 tonight.  How long does it take to do an inspection?  He said they were the fourth wave of cops that had been there.  Apparently the first 2 told their buddies about the car, and they all just had to come check it out.  So the cops already know my car and I havnt even had it 4 days....
