How do you get the top starter nut off on a 440 ? ? ?  I've tried everything I can think of but just can't seem to get a grip of it.  Is there a special tool or wrench that makes it easier? ? ?  Thank's,   Chuck......................

not really. if your fighting it I'll willing to bet you got headers. If yes, You poor bastard. :D on my 440 with HP manifolds I can get to it easily, but with headers you pretty much always have to remove the header to get to that bolt. No special tools, just gotta be like a blind man at an orgy, and feel your way around. sorry to give ya the bad news.

Reaching through the inner fender opening with a short 5/8" wrech will usually get it

Yup Chryco is not so Psycho. I also use headers and remove the left front tire and go through the inner fender well opening. Of course the coolant has to be emptied and the header removed from the block. Oh, by the way. Order a starter from a 1996 Dodge Dakota V-6. It is the mini starter everyone talks about. I use it and love it.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

So, that Dakota starter just bolts right up?  How much smaller is this thing than the stock starter?

Bob

Will that Dakota starter fit the 400?

Chryco Psycho

it is about 1/2 the weight & much smaller , the catch is it is slightly wider & will not fit with hedman headers , it will fit all V8 engines but the adapter where the wires bolt on needs to be removed on the big blocks
