I do not believe this is an original stamped codes, but it must mean something to what was done to this engine.

It's apears to be a 75 model year truck block

I'm not much on 'internals' but I think all cars/trucks after 70 have the same rods or they could have been changed.

Got a pic of the pad?

Is there any way to decode these engines? Is there a good webpage?

There could be but I'm not aware it. I do recall this for the mid 70's engines: if the "T" comes before the displacement, it means Trenton Engine plant and if it follows the displacement, it means truck. Typically, the "E" stamping of that era means cast crank. The 5 would be the model year. The 10.2 probably means assembled on Oct 2nd of 74. The .3 may mean thrid shift but I don't. I also don't know what the 28490 means. Typically, there is a sequence number stamped on the pad for cars but this seems awful high for a sequence number.

Guess I'm probably not much help on this one but here's a bump for some one who may know more...

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

FWIW, of all the 440s I've looked at in my lifetime, that is the first time I have seen that style of font, and have never seen the  "." between what is presumably the date of assembly numbers.

At first I thought the 23490 might be some type of reference number stamped by a machine shop for future reference, but the "4" in it is the same as the "4"s in 440 on the pad.

???

What is the block's casting date?

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

Did they stamp Truck and RV engine differently???  It does have 6 pack rods and the casting numbers on the heads are only for 1974 - 902's   Do 902's heads have hardened seats? I will check the casting date...  10 * 73 Casting date.
