A friend of mine is getting a free 360 from a 86 Dodge van. Were they 904 or 727? I have no iidea how to tell, if its a 727 which I doubt I might get it for free.

I don't think it'd be a 727 but take a peek at the trans pan.  If it's basically square, it's a 904.  If it's a funky shape with kickouts closer to the bellhousing, it's a 727.
