Help!   I need someone who has the same setup as I am intendring to put in my car, take a measurement and let me know what is the correct length of the drive shaft that I need.

My car is a 1970 Charger with an 8 3/4 rear end and a 440/727 combination on the front. I need to know the CORRECT length of the drive shaft from the center of the forward U-joint to the center of the aft U-joint. Thanks, Todd

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Thanks, but I did a search already of existing posts, including the ones you referenced, but they were of no help!
I will check out the autohobby website.

The best and most reliable solution for me, would be to have the measurements from someone who has the actual setup as what I am intending to do. So if there is anyone out there with a 8 3/4 rear and a 440/727 I need your measurement!
Thanks, Todd

would a 383/727 do? I have an 8 3/4 as well.  Oh, and mine is a 69, does that matter??

I know a ton of others here have that same combo too, we'll give it a little bit.

Where is John Kunkel?

The center to center lenght is 52 1/4 for that combo, good luck.

Hey tecmopar------is your 52-1/4 number an actual measurement or a calculation based on published data?  And does your driveshaft have the large circular shaped weight attached to the front just behind the front u-joint (I think it's a vibration dampener).  I am not questioning your number but just trying to clarify where you got it.  Thanks.

The 52 1/4" measurement is a +/- of about 1/16". Thats taken from mine and memory. If you go back to your original post, 4 pages back I think, I explained in it how to get the exact measurement. I always try to avoid shafts with the Vib. Damp. on them, just my own preferance. Good luck.

Thanks.  The only reason I pursued this was there seems to be such a variation in the lengths that are quoted.  I did run across some interesting information this morning while perusing my looseleaf parts catalog that I had missed.  I don't have a way to scan the pages but if anyone happens to have one, look at pages 16-1,2, &3.  It lists actual driveshaft lengths for various configurations.  It doesn't list the Charger, per se, but does list the coronet which appears to be the closest listing.  For the 8-3/4 axle, 383,426,440, A833 & A727, the propeller shaft is listed as 3" dia and 52.07 inches long---u-joint centerline to u-joint centerline, Mopar P/N 2852162.  This is interesting because it is what I calculated after measuring my driveshaft in my 318/904/8-1/4 charger and modifying this dimension for the 440/A833/8-3/4 configuration (based on published info).  I looked at a big pile of driveshafts recently and some the guy told me came out of 68/69 b-bodys measured everything from 51.5 to 52.250.   Based on everything I have been able to put together, it looks like anything from 52 up to 52.250 would work just fine so I will concentrate my search for shafts of this length.  I appreciate the info on the vibration dampener.  I had never seen one of those before I looked through that big pile and was curious about it.  Again, thanks for your reply.
