Hi everyone,

I am moving to Shawnee, KS in July because of my job.  I have never been out there, and lived in CT my whole life.  I plan to rent an apt or something in overland park, although a small house with a garage looks tempting, because I may be lonely if I can't bring my Charger there with me.   :'(  It looks like an affordable area, and it looks like there's some safe neighborhoods near my job.

Anyone live in the area for some time?  Does anyone like it out there?  :icon_smile_question:

Not sure if it's feasible to find a small house to rent with a garage in an area where my car will be safe.  I'd really like to bring it with me, but it looks like a long shot for now.  How is traffic at rush hour btw?

Here's a point of reference:

Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

I don't know the neighborhood you're coming from, but you're doing good living anywhere in Johnson County, Kansas.  Take my word for it, or check out Money Magazine.  Two of the cities in the county are rated in the top 15 Best Cities To Live in the United States, Overland Park and Olathe.  Both are growing by leaps and bounds, and the "imperialists" in charge are looking for every square inch of land they can to annex into their city limits to grow even more.

I've played basketball in Antioch Park on the map you linked to.  Also played softball at Young Park a few blocks south of there.  Livelong Kansas resident, and lived in greater Kansas City 18 years.

You will be tempted to live to the north in Wyandotte County (lived their 9 years prior to move to Johnson County) or to the east in Missouri.  Cheaper, but your "risks" go up.

PM for more info/questions.

Let me guess.  You work for Sprint/Nextel, Yellow Freight, or are an engineer of some sort?

You all can have that big city crap.  I dont care what county it is  they all suck with to many people and traffic headaches!

I'll stay out in the wheat fields in the middle of the state!

I will take note when it comes time to move. It does look like a great place to live.  Perhaps if it works out I can return/stay in KS after my program is up.

I will be working for GE.  :yesnod:

The traffic isn't so bad out here in southern-most suburbia.  I too would prefer a small town, or just outside of a small town, like the one I grew up in.

But, like AJ1966, it made the most sense at the time to locate near my job, which happened to be in Johnson County.

I'm still in Ks but on the opposite side in sw Ks.  About 50 miles nw of Dodge City.  If you wanna see flat land where you can see for a long ways. . . come out here to the west side of the state!  Isn't much to do so don't plan on stayin' long!  :icon_smile_big:
